The committee of the Institute's youth and student section, Young ICorr, met at Birmingham University on May 8th. Several new members were welcomed to the
Majid Ghahari from Birmingham University. An issue of concern that was discussed was the difficulty of contacting the members to keep them informed of events which may
be of interest. Some of the committee have been approached by local branches thatare looking to encourage younger members to theireventsbut unfortunately, Young ICorr does not have a list of members who can be contacted directly. To overcome this, we are looking to compile an email list of ICorr members who would be interested in receiving news of Young ICorr events. If you would like to join such a list, please contact the
committee, including David Warren and me by email; my address can be found on rear cover of Corrosion Management. I would
also like to emphasize that, despite the name of the group, we do not discriminate on age -Young ICorr exists to encourage any member of the Institute who is beginning their career in corrosion, whether in academia or industry.
The 49th Corrosion Science Symposium (CSS) is taking place on the 8th-9th September as part of the Eurocorr 2008 conference, which is being held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. This is an excellent event for Young ICorr members, as it gives students and early-career researchers the opportunity to gain experience of oral and poster presentation in a less intimidating environment. There are two awards presented at CSS, both of which are available to Young ICorr members. The first is the Lionel Shreir Award which is presented for the best student oral presentation at CSS and consists of a £50 cheque and certificate. Secondly, the Galloway Award is presented for the best short article on corrosion research carried out by a student. The winning article is published in Corrosion Management and the winner receives a cheque for £250 and a certificate. Additionally, there is a prize for the best poster presentation. Attending the Corrosion Science Symposium also provides a good opportunity for meeting with academics and industrial corrosion specialists. Student registration costs £250 for the entire Eurocorr conference or £200 for the two days of CSS and the Young ICorr committee would encourage academics to give their students the opportunity to attend. In addition to the formal events taking place during Eurocorr, the Young ICorr members will be going out for a few drinks round Edinburgh on Tuesday 9th. There is no fixed plan, but we'll meet at 9pm and see what happens. The meeting place has yet to be decided, but we will announce it at CSS. Please feel free to join us, regardless of whether or not you feel you're eligible for Young ICorr membership!

The 46th Corrosion Science Symposium will be held in Manchester from the 13th to the 15th September
Following the success of the past years, everybody expects it to be a very interesting event for the corrosion community in the UK, with the topics discussed this year ranging from Modelling of Material Performance to Intelligent Coatings.
Discussing corrosion problems and new concepts with students and professionals in the industry in a very relaxed atmosphere has always been the vault key of the success of CSS! The Young ICorr committee hopes to see young corrosion secientists join in the event!

The success Of the 45th CSS held at Sheffield Hallum University in September 2004 was evident. The conference itself went very well; everyone had a very interesting and enjoyable time, with many student papers and poster presentations of extremely high standards.
We would also like to congratulate this year’s winner of the Shreir Young Speaker Prize; Christopher Wylie from the University of Birmingham UK. In addition to the winner of the poster prize; Vincenza Marzocchi from the “Universita’ degli Studi di Napoli Federico II”, Italy.
Also we would lie to draw attention to the 16th International Corrosion Congress to be held in Beijing, China. It is a good opportunity for corrosion students to attend an international conference, since it covers a large array of topics and has a good social program.
The Young ICorr Column is now open to all its members to submit articles they feel might be interesting to other members as well as to enhance communication amongst the corrosion community
The articles can be

• A report of any interesting conference/
meeting that you would recommend
