Young ICorr
Oliver Lewis Becomes Chairman of the Young ICorr Group

Oliver is currently in the final year of a PhD in the Surface Engineering Group in the Institute of Polymer Tech no logy and Materials Engineering (IPTME) at Loughborough University. His first degree, also at Loughborough, was in Materials Engineering and for this he undertook a final year project studying conversion coatings for zinc electroplated surfaces. This work led to his first presentation at the Corrosion Science Symposium in 2004. He joined the Young ICorr committee earlier this year as treasurer and when the previous chairman, Cristiano Padovani decided to hand over the responsibility, he volunteered.

The Young ICorr group was created primarily for student members of the Institute of Corrosion. It exists to encourage young people to pursue careers in corrosion-related areas by organising both social and technical events. As the members come from the various universities involved in the study of corrosion it's a great way to meet people working in a similar field. There are also opportunities to get involved with thecommittee, something which is a useful experience not necessarily available to university students.

Young ICorr does not at present have any forthcoming meetings to announce but this is something that the committee will hopefully be addressing at their next meeting. In the meantime, Oliver would like to draw the attention of Young ICorr members to the event being organised by the ICorr London branch on January 10th. The speaker is Colin Murdoch who, aged 30, is responsible for the corrosion department at BP.We are sure Colin will have lots of advice and encouragement for younger members so please come along. Further details will be published by the London branch in Corrosion Management.

Finally, if there are any student members in the Institute who would like to get involved with the Young ICorr committee or maybe just suggest some possible events they'd like to see, please don't hesitate to contact Oliver by emailing him at o.d.lewis@lboro.ac.uk

The 46th Corrosion Science Symposium will be held in Manchester from the 13th to the 15th September

Following the success of the past years, everybody expects it to be a very interesting event for the corrosion community in the UK, with the topics discussed this year ranging from Modelling of Material Performance to Intelligent Coatings.

Discussing corrosion problems and new concepts with students and professionals in the industry in a very relaxed atmosphere has always been the vault key of the success of CSS! The Young ICorr committee hopes to see young corrosion secientists join in the event!

The success Of the 45th CSS held at Sheffield Hallum University in September 2004 was evident. The conference itself went very well; everyone had a very interesting and enjoyable time, with many student papers and poster presentations of extremely high standards.

We would also like to congratulate this year’s winner of the Shreir Young Speaker Prize; Christopher Wylie from the University of Birmingham UK. In addition to the winner of the poster prize; Vincenza Marzocchi from the “Universita’ degli Studi di Napoli Federico II”, Italy.

Also we would lie to draw attention to the 16th International Corrosion Congress to be held in Beijing, China. It is a good opportunity for corrosion students to attend an international conference, since it covers a large array of topics and has a good social program.

• A profile of the members explaining publications, any experience they have studies/ career path or any personal feeling as a "corrosionist"

• A scientific report based on member's own research, studies of impact of corrosion science/ engineering to the world,

• A report of any interesting conference/ meeting that you would recommend others to attend in the future.

• Information about a particular world wide website of which you think one can get useful information from and a short description of the mentioned site.

Articles submitted should be in electronic form of text or MS word format, images can be included; in this case please send a jpeg format file of your images along with the articie. Corrosion Management readers are also encouraged to send their response or feedback on any published articles from YICorr members. In which case, it is also a chance for you to raise any issue/' discussion/ debate related to the field of corrosion. We look forward to hearing from you and your input will be well appreciated.
