London's Brewery Bash
London’s Brewery Bash Over 150 ICorr members and guests enjoyed an excellent afternoon Luncheon at the newly refurbished Whitbread Brewery Vaults in the City of London (photo 1). This was the 19th Anniversary of the first such Luncheon organized by the London Branch. Back in 1988, the concept was discussed by a small select Committee meeting at BP House as the guests of Fred Palmer. Fred has already done most of the groundwork as his office overlooked the Brewery and to which he was a frequent visitor.
This first event was deemed a great success, with 64 attendees and a profit of £800. It was then agreed to make this an Annual Event.
Fred, along with the late Peter Cross, also developed and initiated the London Branch Day at the Varsity Match. Unfortunately this year the organiser Twickenham changed the day and date in May to coincide with our already booked and confirmed date for the Luncheon. Derek Hoskins, as the co-ordinator of this event is convinced that this tradition will resume next year, but on a different week to the Luncheon.
As well as being a good time had by all, the 2007 Luncheon was also the stage for a number of special tributes. Our President in her speech, thanked the London Branch, particularly the hard-working Committee, all it’s Sustaining Company Members who playa vital role in the funding of the Branch and all those who are regular supporters at meetings and events. Brenda also made reference to the intention of having a new bespoke, all dancing and singing, website and in thanking Dr Christopher O’Shea for all his past efforts, hoped that he would agree to continue as Webmaster.
The Branch Chairman, David Mobbs., thanked the out-going Chairman, Trevor Osborne and presented him with an engraved tankard (photo 2).
Chairman David also thanked John O’Shea for his many years of Hon Secretary and presented him with an engraved tankard (photo 3). John congratulated Geoff White on his election and wished him well for the future as the Hon Secretary of London Branch.
Past President and Chairman of Correx, David Deacon, also made a presentation to John. David remarked that he had worked with 27 Presidents, all with different approaches and goals, but it was only during John’s Presidency that the Institute purchased its own Headquarters, Corrosion House in September 2001. The Trustees and Council have recently decided to sell Corrosion House, due to a number of local issues and with a profit of over £60,000 on the buying price. To mark this decision and etching by Pamela Valentine of Corrosion House had been commissioned and was presented to John (photo 4).
In supporting the sale, John had asked for two conditions. Firstly that all the money from the sale, including the profits, should be ring-fenced and only used for the purchase of a new property. This had been formally agreed and minuted at the last Council Meeting. Secondly John asked if he could have the plaque in the entrance hall, which commemorated the opening of Corrosion House. This had been a day of celebration and attended by many. (See Corrosion Management Nov/Dec 2001). David has secured this plaque prior to any sale agreement and was pleased to present it to John (photo 5).
It was clear that John was stunned by the occasion as he had very little to say, but he did thank David for his extreme thoughtfulness and friendship. Without David’s support, that of Eddie Field and Dr Robert Edyvean, the purchase would not have occurred. He urged that the money from the sale is used as soon as practical ,before the money is squandered as in the past, to buy another building, or even a castle! “Corrosion Castle” had a good ring to it.
In 2001 Gill Inwood agreed to manage the newly contracted out Admin Service at Corrosion House. This she believed to be for a short time of a year or so. Several years later, she is still in charge and doing a brilliant job. To thank Gill for all her work and support for the Institute, John presented her with a special, heavy-duty Christmas goodie-bag (photo 6).
Derek Hoskins, with the help of Katie Deacon, drew the raffle. This plus the tireless efforts of Mike Allen in organising the event always creates a healthy profit for the Institute.
The event was rounded off by Joe Goodman, a well known professional after-dinner speaker, who entertained the gathering and sent everyone on their way with a smile and happy memories of another great London Branch Event.

London Branch Blue Badge Guided Tour of Belgravia
Money, Murder & the Marquess
This year’s London Branch Summer Evening Guided Tour will be a walking event discovering what really goes on behind the facades of those silent Magnolia covered exteriors that are synonymous with Belgravia. This peaceful enclave, where the traditional upper classes are gradually giving way to the Russian “noveaux riches”, is not only the home of Prime Ministers and aristocrats. It has also witnessed unexplained disappearances and murder most foul…..
Gourmets in a church, a cherished film location but also the hide away of some of London’s most delightful pubs. One will definitely be busy during our walking tour….!

Meet 8th May at 17.45 opposite Main Entrance of Victoria Station by the statue of Marechal Foch in Grosvenor Gardens SW1 [facing Buckingham Palace Road].
We will finish a Tour as usual at the Naval Club for traditional hot chilli and rice with some liquid refreshments.
