A new Branch is launched

On 11th May 2006 a new Branch of the Institute of Corrosion was formed to serve South Wales & the West of England.

At a meeting of interested parties held in Hempel Paint’s, Llantarnam Park offices near Newport in South Wales a new branch was formed to be called the ‘South Wales & West of England’ branch. It is intended to serve the regional interests of ICorr members and others with an interest in corrosion, coatings and related subjects. The new branch is the culmination of efforts by Peter Morgan, Phil Powell and Nick Frowen to raise the profile of ICorr in the region.

Why do we need to form a new branch? For ICorr members in the region who want to attend other branch functions or events, their locations have meant that the distance necessary to travel to them has presented a major problem. Now, with a branch in the area, specific regional topics, subjects and interests can be better served.

It is intended initially to hold 2 technical meetings each year and 1 social event. More will be planned as interest in the branch expands.

Whilst the branch is intended to serve the specific needs of the area for anyone with a common interest in Corrosion, a very warm welcome will be extended to all ICorr members and members of other Institutes and their guests who wish to attend and contribute to these events. At the meeting to set up the branch, from left to right in the photo were:

Peter Morgan (Chairman).
Peter is the Managing Partner of Lithgow Associates and will be familiar to Readers of Corrosion Management having chaired the ICorr PDC committee for over 10 years. He has also held various other council and committee posts. Peter is internationally recognized as an inspection and coating failure specialist and has worked in some 64 countries.

Brian Stevens
Brian is a director of BPS Inspection Services Ltd. which carries out non-destructive testing inspection services in many of the fabrication yards in the area.

Nick Frowen (Secretary)
Nick is Technical Director of Hempel Paint and is keen to continue Hempel's long standing relationship with ICorr. He is delighted to be able support the setting up of a branch in the area. Nick is looking forward to some interesting and exciting future gatherings.

Andrew Moore
Andrew of Belzona is very pleased to take part in the first meeting of the new branch and is delighted to participate in and support future events.

Phil Powell (Treasurer) Phil a coating engineer with a wide range of experience who derives pleasures in tackling the more demanding contractual and technical coating jobs. Phil has long desired local ICorr events, as the distance to other branch events has been a problem. Phil is also the Technical Director of TAP a company recently set up to build and operate microhydroelctrical plants in the lower Wye Valley. Later in the year he hopes to arrange a site visit to one or two of the plants now under development.

Gareth Jones
Gareth is the Commercial Manager of Zinga, based in Shropshire. An ICorr member for 2 years, Gareth is keen to promote and strengthen the Institute.

Stacey Mosses
Stacey is Technical Director of Industrial Paint Services SW Limited. IPS is a Newport based company that specializes in the supply of paint services.

Alan Beere
Alan of Hi Tec Cathodic Protection is, like Gareth, keen to promote and strengthen the Institute’s activities in the area.

Bob Etches
Bob, based in Swansea, is an associate director of STATS LTD, one of our well-established and highly regarded inspection companies. Bob has 40 years experience in engineering and is keen to promote Institute activities, particularly among younger prospective members.

Expressions of interest were shown from some 10 other people who were unable to attend the meeting due to other commitments but had submitted their apologies.

The meeting commenced with an introduction by Peter Morgan, who briefly discussed the roles, requirements and benefits of setting up a new branch. This was followed by a unanimous vote in favour of setting up a local branch. The meeting next elected the officers to run the branch and followed with a discussion on the roles of each officer. There then followed a fairly lively discussion of themes and venues for events. The social event generated plenty of suggestions and the branch officers felt some research would be needed.

The meeting concluded with a request to Institute members in the area unable to attend this meeting to come forward with any ideas and suggestions for themes and venues either to Peter or Nick. Hempel Paints, who are firm supporters of the Institute, were formally thanked for supplying the meeting venue and refreshments.
