The Galloway Medal is named after J. O. (Jack) Galloway (1924-1966), an active member of the corrosion engineering community who was President of the British Association of Corrosion Engineers when he died. The award was established in his memory to encourage early awareness of corrosion and expertise in the field of corrosion prevention.

The medal will be awarded annually to an outstanding student in the field of corrosion science, technology or engineering. The award consists of the medal and a cheque for £100. In addition the winner will be invited to attend the Corrosion Science Symposium to receive the award and give a paper on their work, with the symposium registration and accommodation costs being covered as part of the award. An extended abstract of the work will be published in "Corrosion Management".

To be eligible, a candidate should be a registered student (either postgraduate or undergraduate) at the submission deadline, and be a student member of the Institute of Corrosion. The award is open to candidates of any nationality.

In order to be considered, candidates should submit a report 3000-5000 words in length based on research that they have carried out. It should include an introduction indicating familiarity with the relevant literature, sufficient experimental details to allow the results to be replicated, clear presentation and discussion of experimental data, and a summary of the findings. The work should be sufficiently novel to warrant publication and represent a significant contribution to the field, but should not yet have been submitted for Journal publication.

This year, the report had to be submitted to the Institute of Corrosion by May 31st 2003 together with a one-page extended abstract (preferably including figures), the candidate's contact details, and a letter from a member of staff from the candidate's institution confirming their registration status. The award winner's abstract will be published in "Corrosion Management".

The selection will by made by a subcommittee of the Corrosion Science Division that does not contain any members from institutions with which candidates are affiliated.
