The Institute Explored: Part 3. Communications and Publications. All
organisations require effective communications to function or even just to
survive. For a Learned Professional Body such as this Institute there is a much
greater need to deal with internal and considerably varied external
communications either as a source of information or in its day to day
operation. Communications Clear
points of contact and responsibility have been established within the Institute
to provide a rapid response with help, support or information requested from
any member. Internal communications are effectively dealt with by Dr. J.
Brunell-Gray (Honorary Secretary). Dr. D. Mills deals with technical matters
and has recently set up the List of Technical Experts willing to give immediate
advice and help with corrosion related problems. Publications. A wide range of educational and technological
publications including journals, books, technical reports and educational
course material are looked after by the Publications Committee under the
Chairmanship of Brian Tunnard. Brian is also the Technical Editor of Corrosion
Management. Concise
and very useful “Guides to Practice and Corrosion Control” produced in
conjunction with NPL are available at £5 a copy (including p&p). These
cover 16 different aspects including Cathodic Protection, Stress Corrosion and
The Application and Properties of Engineering Coatings. More detailed
information is available in a variety of Corrosion Engineering Reports (TACC
Reports) which relate to the Oil and Gas Industry. These include Corrosion
Monitoring, C.P., Biological Corrosion and many aspects of Coatings including
Hot-Dip Galvanising. These are available to members at discounted rate of £6
per copy (+p&p). The Institute also sponsors books and other guides on key
topics relating to corrosion science
and engineering in association with various publishers and these are also
available to members at reduced rates. Journals. In
addition to this Journal (Corrosion Management) the Institute’s principal
scientific publication is Corrosion Science. This is an international journal
covering pure and applied aspects of environmental degradation of materials and
its control. It has a high reputation and a strong impact factor with many of
its published papers later being commonly referenced elsewhere. Dr. G. T.
Burstein at the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science at Cambridge
University is the Editor and to whom all contributions should be sent. Each
year the Institute awards the T.P.Hoar prize of £100 to the author of the best
paper published in this Journal over the past twelve months. It has just been
announced that last year’s winner was Dr. L. Robbiola. The
Institute also co-sponsors Protective Coatings Europe (PCE) a monthly journal
addressing corrosion control for marine and industrial structures. Technical
Papers. The prestige and reputation of the Institute in the
European and global corrosion scene is also maintained by organising and
supporting regular workshops, seminars and conferences. Work is in hand to
transfer the papers and proceedings of many of these onto a CD Rom. In the
meantime a comprehensive technical library is held at Head Office and is
available to all members. Website.(http://www.icorr.org) An
active website has been set up and is administered by Dr. R. Akid of Sheffield
Hallam University. This has over 12 sections concerning the Institute including
details of conferences and Branch meetings. There are “Hot links” to the
websites of Sustaining Members and plans are in place to set up a recruitment
page managed by Deesons, the publishers of Corrosion Management. All
enquiries concerning any of the aspects covered in this article should be addressed in the first instance to the
Head Office at Leighton Buzzard (Tel 01525 851771) where you are assured of a
friendly voice and excellent service.
