Icorr Aberdeen Branch Programme of Events

Institute of Corrosion Technical Presentation
When: Tue 29 Nov 2011 18:00 for 18.30 to end 19.30
Where: Palm Court Hotel, 81 Seafield Road, Aberdeen AB15 7YX
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: Speaker: Jonathan Marsh (WGIM).  Topic: Pipeline Integrity Management, No Guarantees?"

The presenter, Jonathan Marsh works for Wood Group Integrity Management (part of Wood Group Kenny). He is the Corrosion and Materials technical authority for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region. He has an MSc and PhD in corrosion science and engineering from UMIST, and has authored or co-authored more than 40 publications in the fields of corrosion, materials, and most recently pipeline integrity and future life prediction."

This presentation will examine a number of field examples where unexpected integrity threats were identified. This includes a number of examples where field corrosion rates were found to exceed the calculated inhibited corrosion rates, or even the uninhibited corrosion rate, some due to unexpected corrosion mechanisms. Other examples include pitting of 22% Cr Duplex in long term storage, and issues with respect to defects identified by ILI runs, including failures at subsequent areas where minimal damage had been  identified. Conclusions and lessons learned will be discussed.

Institute of Corrosion Technical Presentation

Where: Palm Court Hotel, 81 Seafield Road, Aberdeen AB15 7YX
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: Speaker: Dr David Baxter (ATKINS Oil and Gas) Topic: Corrosion Fatigue of Subsea Pipelines

Dr David Baxter is a principal consultant within the 'Subsea' section of Atkins Oil & Gas. He is a Materials Engineer with 20 years experience in the defence, marine and oil and gas industries, specialising in the mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour of steels and stainless steels. His research interests focus on environment assisted cracking, most recently with respect to pipeline steels in sour production environments. The fatigue performance of pipeline or riser girth welds is often a critical factor for design and under corrosive conditions the detrimental influence of an environment on anticipated fatigue lives needs to be taken into account. Fatigue design codes provide some advice for the case of loading in seawater at typical wave frequencies, but in other environments (e.g. sour or sweet applications) or at other cyclic loading frequencies, the required approach is less certain, and laboratory testing is often required. For pipelines subject to lateral buckling, there are additional complications, as the operational fatigue loading is of very low frequency. This creates practical difficulties, as it is not possible to conduct laboratory tests at a frequency that is “representative” of that expected during service. This presentation outlines an approach taken on typical projects to resolve this problem, and provides a summary of recently published research undertaken as part of the SAFEBUCK JIP.

Institute of Corrosion Technical Presentation

When: Tue 28 Feb 2012 18:00 for 18.30 to end 19.30
Where: Palm Court Hotel, 81 Seafield Road, Aberdeen AB15 7YX

Event Description: Speaker: John Thirkettle (Thor Corrosion).  Topic: UK CUI Industrial Forum - 10 Years Progress.

John Thirkettle of Thorcorrosion will be discussing the problem of Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) in industrial plants. His talk will cover a brief history of how the awareness of the CUI problem has increased since the 1970s and how the CUI industrial forum was set up and engaged in proactive workshops to exchange vital information noting key experiences in the industry. During the presentation, John Thirkettle will discuss the mechanism of CUI, its insidious nature and negative effects of damage cladding which often triggers the onset of CUI. Inspecting pipework under insulation is not possible except by intrusive methods so the presenter will go into more detail on the suitable coating systems for application under insulation discussing new innovations being made in the area with notes on ideas being made in statistical analysis.

Joint Marine Corrosion Forum (MCF) and Institute of Corrosion Technical Presentation

When: Tue 17 Apr 2012 17:30 for 18.00 to end 19.00
Where: Palm Court Hotel, 81 Seafield Road, Aberdeen AB15 7YX
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: Speaker: Dr Nigel Owen (Aberdeen Foundries Ltd).  Topic: Al-Zn-In Sacrificial Anodes Manufacture and Specification.

The Al-Zn-In family history of alloy development is discussed. The Evolution of Manufacturing techniques and specifications relating to the anode compositions and testing will be reviewed. There are tens of standards and hundreds of individual 'operator' drafted versions of specifications for this basic compositional mix of alloy and its test requirements. Is it about time these were rationalised? We need to dispel the myths, strip back the contract specifications and work to one standard. This is not Alchemy.

Event Description: Subject: Validation Testing of Composite Repairs for Pipes and Pipelines Presenter: John Middleton, Tuscan Corrosion Control Aberdeen branch meetings begin at 18:00 with a complimentary light buffet and the opportunity to network with other corrosion professionals, followed by the technical presentation at 18:30. Presentation Summary: The use of thermosetting polymers combined with reinforcing fibres has a long and varied history of being used as a repair material for structural applications. With the advent of specialized resins and reinforcing fibres, plastic composites are now accepted in a wide variety of repair applications which include piping systems and pipelines. This technology has matured significantly in the last decade and is now used widely throughout the world by the largest and most technically advanced oil and gas companies. It is important for those specifying and using composites to understand what they are buying and what the benefits and limitations are. This presentation addresses what the pipeline owner and operator can reasonably expect from a composite repair system with regards to performance and testing. What are its abilities and its limitations? Referring to the requirements set forth in the ASME PCC-2, Articles 4.1 and 4.2 and ISO/TS-24817, what validation testing should the end user expect and how are the results interpreted? Both reasonable and unreasonable test methodologies are addressed and examples of each are given.
