The scheme was brought about because
of the manifest lack of uniformity in abilities and inconsistencies in the
approach of many of the newcomers to painting inspection.
Major clients and specifiers of
protective treatment projects increasingly were looking for tangible assurance
that inspectors' training and abilities matched their claims set out in their
employment applications.
What was needed on an
international scale was a comprehensive, consistent and structured training
programme embracing all the essential aspects of the various disciplines within
the fields of protective treatment inspection and based on ISO, EN
and other international standards rather than merely company or national
standards of limited geographical applicability.
This needed to be linked to a
system of certification of inspectors who had demonstrated, in examination,
that they had absorbed both the theoretical and practical training sufficiently
to be qualified to one of the various levels.
The ICorr scheme amply satisfies
the above needs and aligns to the requirements of EN 45013 - General
criteria for certification bodies operating certificate of personnel.
The training and examinations
are carried out regularly throughout the UK, in the Middle East and Malaysia
but can be undertaken anywhere by arrangement.
The administration of the scheme
is overseen by a governing board which includes ICorr directors. The board is
responsible for the review and auditing of both training and examination
standards and for the issue of certificates to the successful candidates.
The main beneficiaries of the
scheme are the customers and employers of painting inspection, where
ever they may be, because they now have access to a growing resource of
certificated, regulated individuals whose competence to the level of their certification
may be relied upon.
The
other main beneficiaries are the certificated inspectors themselves
because they possess world-recognised, validated evidence of their training and
competence.
ICorr has an open policy towards
the scheme and endeavours to make it clear to all concerned as to what is
involved and what has been achieved by the holder of certification.
Examination marks achieved are
shown on Certificates of Achievement issued, the reverse side of each
certificate lists the operations, duties, etc in which a certified individual
has demonstrated competence.
The requirements for experience,
training, examinations, etc are fully detailed in the ICORR REQ DOC
- Requirements for the Certification of Personnel Engaged in Painting and
Coating Inspection.
