HARRY HATLEY OBITUARY

I personally was very saddened to hear over the Christmas/New Year holiday period that Harry Hatley had passed away peacefully in December, at the age of 81 and his funeral was held at Emsworth Crematorium on Monday 4th January, the first working day of the New Year.

Harry’s funeral was packed and very moving tributes were made by his two sons, Jim and Rob.  I was privileged to attend as the, representative of the Institute of Corrosion, in view of Harry’s involvement with the corrosion world for most of his working life.

Harry was a founder member of BACE the fore runner of our present Institute and has been a paid up member for all of the 50 years from 1959 to 2009.  He was the first Chairman of the London Branch, when Regional Branches were formed in the early days, and, was actively involved in the Membership and Professional Assessment Committees, vetting the appointment of many hundreds of professional members of our Institute over that period of time.

He was also the first author of our Code of Professional Conduct, and was very concerned about keeping the professional standards of our membership at a high level.  The 50th anniversary organising committee invited him to the celebrations at the Thames Barrier as a VIP, in recognition of his services to industry and the Institute and I was delighted that he attended that event with his son, Rob, and was able to receive his VIP certificate from President Paul Lambert.

Robin Bailey, who was very close to Harry throughout his working and personal life has provided us with a detailed obituary see below.
When Harry had problems in his personal life and he had to hand over the running of his company, Robin Bailey took over and rebuilt it for him at that time.

Thank you Robin for providing the membership with such a detailed and moving history or Harry’s life.
