London Branch Update

On October 23rd there was an excellent attendance of 54 at the Naval Club for the joint meeting of London Branch with NACE.  At the start, Mike Moffat officially presented the London Branch Golf Day prizes to representatives of the winning teams, Jotun for the Len Townsend Memorial Rose Bowl Trophy, Winn and Coales for the Denso Cup, and Dave Willis who received the Ameron Tray.  Our main speaker was Dr. Stefan Winnik of ExxonMobil who talked with illustrations about corrosion under insulation and its control.  He explained how corrosion failures had occurred within four years in such circumstances with the added difficulties and expense of shut-downs as a result, but that with the correct approach a life of 30 years could be achieved.  There was emphasis on using the correct coatings on suitably prepared surfaces, and also on the costs involved with unchecked corrosion which could amount to as much as 10% of the annual budget in some cases.
