ICorr Aberdeen Branch Update 2008

The Aberdeen Branch of the Institute of Corrosion held the following meetings in the previous 2007/2008 season and the present 2008/2009 season.

May 2008: Corrosion and Integrity Management Issues – Perspectives from Engineering Design/Construction to Operations,
By George Frank, CAN Offshore Ltd.

September 2008: Application of a web based technologies for Integrity Management System By Neil Rothwell; C3Amulet Ltd.

October 2008: Corrosion in sea ports – Overview and Update By Eur Ing J B Christie Assistant Engineering Director, Aberdeen Harbour Board.

An overview of the meetings in May 2008 (2007/2008 season); September and October 2008 is presented below.

May 2008 The speaker - George Frank of CAN Offshore Ltd raised issues on the need to adequately implement whole life cycle costing and estimating during project design and engineering phase. These decisions/indecisions impact heavily on the efficacy of integrity management systems during the operational years. He also talked about how the key drivers of governments’ fiscal regimes – (HMRC in the UK) affect decision making and choices made by project directors/sponsors and ultimately integrity management systems in the operations phase of a project. The speaker also talked about the need for a more structured feedback loop between the regulatory organizations, operators, design/engineering companies and inspection/integrity management companies.

George Frank Delivering his presentation

A question and answer session culminated the day’s technical meeting. The meeting was chaired by Alison Chalmers; Branch Chair, ICorr; Aberdeen branch.

September 2008 The speaker - Dr. Neil Rothwell of C3amulet Ltd presented a web based integrity management software tool that could be developed around and/or on a client’s existing systems, this is advantageous to clients as they don’t discard any of their historical data and integrity systems. The C3 amulet Enterprise system as presented by the speaker also provides opportunities to seamlessly link up with client outlook email, scheduling and planning templates, inspection logbooks/workpacks, anomaly and alarm registers amongst others. This enables all integrity management interfaces and nodes to work together, utilizing a web based platform. An interactive question and answer session followed the presentation. The meeting was chaired by Alison Chalmers; branch Chair of ICorr; Aberdeen branch.

Jamie Christie delivering his presentation

October 2008 The speaker - Jamie Christie of Aberdeen Harbours Board; delivered a presentation that highlighted the phenomenon of Accelerated Low Water Corrosion (ALWC). This has had deleterious effects on concrete berth facilities in Aberdeen harbour and also around the world. As he noted, in the past (circa up to 15years ago) there were no recorded cases of ALWC. ALWC as explained is the degradation of concrete facilities in ports and harbours. There is still an ongoing search to determine the causes for ALWC- though evidence points to SRB as precursors for this corrosion attack mechanism. The speaker explained as part of mitigation and repair strategy an integrity management system had been developed for Aberdeen harbours by IICORR. This system as enumerated, ranks the berths in terms of criticality to failure, this then enables the prioritization of inspection and remedial works on the affected berths.

Cross ection of attendees

The speaker showed several slides which gave pictorial evidence of the nature and consequences of ALWC in ports and harbours worldwide.

A question and answer session by the interested audience followed the presentation by the speaker. Alison Chalmers, ICorr Aberdeen, branch chair, presided over the event.
