DESCRIPTION:The March technical talk\,“Flint Water Crisis – Corrosion\, Management and Politics”\, by Dr Ben Moorhouse.The meeting will be held at the Lancaster Hall Hotel\, 35 Craven Terrace\, London W2 3EL\, and streamed online for those who can not attend in person. \nThe town Flint\, Michigan suffered one of the worst water crisis in the United States of America\, when in 2014 the tap water supply began to be poisoned with corrosion products and other toxins. Hundreds of thousands of Flint residents were exposed to dangerous levels of lead and outbreaks of Legionnaires disease that caused deaths and long term health problems. This talk will focus on the decisions that led to this outcome\, the corrosion engineering around ensuring safe water sources and the importance of ensuring a greater understanding of corrosion issues in relation to environmental issues. \nBen Moorhouse is a materials\, corrosion and inspection engineer with a decade’s worth of experience involved with various engineering projects and operations. He studied at Imperial College and completed a PhD focusing on thermodynamic processes to remove impurities from titanium alloys. As part of his day to day\, he is Chairperson of the London Branch of the Institute of Corrosion\, a Fellow of the Institute of Materials\, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and a Chartered Engineer. DESCRIPTION:“A diversified approach to utilizing volatile corrosion Inhibitors (VCI)’’ – Talk by Philip Low\, European/Middle East/GCC Business Development Manager\, Zerust Oil & Gas. \nThe presentation will shed light on various approaches using volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI’) technology in mitigating corrosion on pipelines\, pipeline casing protection and above ground storage  tanks. \nFinally\, a novel methodology for addressing CUI and Scab Repairs using a self-amalgamating inhibitor  fused tape: \nWhat are VCIs and How Do They Work.   \nAn explainer and short animation on how the technology works in a 3 phased protective approach. \nAbove Ground Storage Tanks (AST’s)   \nWe never know when\, but ultimately all CP systems under storage tanks fail. When they do\, there are not  very many easy or inexpensive ways to repair or replace them. Whether you are building new tanks or  involved in an API 653 inspection and the data indicates that the CP is not protecting everywhere\, it is  possible to install a backup plan. \nThis presentation will examine the installation of VCI delivery systems for various civil configurations and  geometries. \nWith changes to regulations in the US\, VCI can be used to mitigate corrosion under tank floors in  conjunction with CP or in many cases\, in lieu of CP. Information on the delivery system options will be  presented\, and data demonstrating the symbiotic relationship between VCI and CP will be shared. There  are several delivery system designs based on the foundation design of the tank. These minor modifications to a tank foundation can significantly reduce cost and downtime in the future. \nSummary: What do you do when your Cathodic Protection system does not last until the 653 Inspection?  Can you build in a backup system inexpensively and easily? This discussion will examine options which  can be utilized or installed during a current inspection or construction which may enable the enhancement  of a weak or failed CP system\, prior to the next inspection. \nPipeline Casing Protection and Using VCIs  \nNACE and PHMSA (DOT) have ratified the use Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI’s) as a corrosion  mitigation strategy\, \nThis presentation will focus on what the regulations from NACE\, CEOCOR and PHMSA (DOT) have  ratified the use Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI’s) as a corrosion mitigation strategy\, and how they  describe Multiphase delivery options including: “Dry Powder”\, “Gel” and “Slurry” applications and when to  choose each. Case studies will be shared from the most common Gel applications. \nVCI’s to Prevent Generalized Internal and Microbial Internal Corrosion in Facility Pipes  \nA recurring issue during the construction and commissioning of facility pipe assets is the creation of internal  corrosion threats due to leftover hydrotest water. Available methods for removing the water entirely\, or  applying inhibitor chemicals to the hydrotest medium\, are time-consuming and expensive. A major Oil and  Gas client applied vaporous corrosion inhibitor (VCI) chemicals in lieu of other methods which would  mitigate the internal corrosion threats. This method proved to be very effective at mitigating both biological  and generalized internal corrosion. A case study will be shared. \nA Novel Methodology For Addressing Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) and Scab Repairs Utilizing  Corrosion Inhibitor Impregnated Self-Amalgamating Silicone Based Tape  \nZerust Inhibitor Tape (ZIF) was specifically designed to combat the many areas to address when we  evaluate a corrosion protection mechanism for CUI and Scab repairs\, the main challenge is creating a  physical barrier between the steel substrate and insulation medium. \nZIF provides this barrier in the form of a robust silicone based self-amalgamating tape\, in addition to the  robust outer nature of the tape; it is also impregnated with a corrosion inhibitor to combat any potential  water or sweating of the line. \nFinally\, the tape is translucent to allow ease during inspection and due to ZIF having no glues/resins/primers for the adhesion mechanism; the tape is easily removed for allowing inspection  cycles. The tape has also recently passed ISO-19277 \nPreservation of assets during idle or mothballed periods including spare parts and critical spare  parts  \nOil platforms including MDU’s\, fixed\, land and FPSOs are an integral part of modern day oil production. Not  surprisingly\, the number of rigs in operation at any given time is tied directly to the price of crude oil. The collapse  of oil prices in 2020 due to the global pandemic has caused a large number of rigs to be mothballed albeit cold\,  warm or hot stacked as well as many high value critical spares to sit idle for prolonged periods of time\, which of  course they are never designed or engineered to do so. \nAn offshore oil platform is a very expensive asset\, as is all associated parts and equipment; the average cost of an  offshore rig is around $650+ million. As such\, it is critical to put in place a robust preservation strategy to  safeguard and prolong asset/equipment life. This statement is also true for spare parts and critical spare parts  during storage and lay up\, the topic will cover proactive approaches to preservation. \nAbout the presenter: \nPhilip Low\, European/Middle East/GCC Business Development Manager Zerust Oil & Gas. \nPhil brings 25+ years’ experience in the Global Oil and Gas industry. \nHaving developed a wide range of skills within project and site managerial roles across the Uk and Norwegian O&G sectors\, His understanding of the many challenges faced by maintenance and construction teams in this environment is invaluable when dealing with our customers and clients and the many problematic issues they face. \nWith responsibility for asset and corrosion management and fabric maintenance on various onshore and offshore facilities\, Phil has continued to add to his knowledge and help develop new preventative techniques for a number of issues surrounding these facilities. DESCRIPTION:January 13\, 2022 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm\n“Life extension of offshore platforms\, through retrofit CP design assisted by modelling’’ – Talk by Dr Paolo Marcassoli\, Cathodic Protection and Inspections Manager at Cescor\, and Istvan Bartha\, Independent Subsea Consultant.  \nThousands of permanent offshore structures for oil and gas production in the world\, including steel jacket platforms\, are reaching or have exceeded their original design life. They require extension of life or re-qualification programs to prolong their operating life. Cathodic protection (CP) is one of the issues to be carefully managed as part of this process. In case the original CP system cannot guarantee the planned residual life\, a retrofit intervention shall be designed and executed.  The design of CP retrofit systems\, although technically adhering to the stipulations of the applicable codes\, does not necessarily follow the criteria and approaches adopted for new facilities\, as the intervention requires to be executed with the structure in-place\, and this has a strong impact on installation requirements and costs. Accordingly\, dedicated CP expertise has been developed for retrofit applications\, aimed to select the most convenient system. A tailored approach is followed\, by considering the most appropriate design parameters\, affected by the present polarisation conditions\, presence of marine growth and calcareous deposit on the structure. Finite Element Method (FEM) and Boundary Element Method (BEM) modelling are extensively and successfully used as part of the selection and optimisation of galvanic anode or impressed current systems. \nIn this presentation\, the definition of CP design parameters and the optimisation activity assisted by modelling are illustrated from the viewpoint of real industrial application; taking into consideration limitations imposed during the installation phase. \nAbout the presenters: \nDr. Paolo Marcassoli (Cescor – Cathodic Protection and Inspections Manager) \nPaolo Marcassoli has fifteen years’ experience in materials and corrosion engineering and cathodic protection engineering gained in academic field and the onshore and offshore oil & gas industry\, offshore wind\, civil and infrastructures. DESCRIPTION:Optimizing impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) anode sled locations for offshore jacket structure retrofits.\n\nPresenter: Dr Matthew Taylor (Deepwater Corrosion Services\, Inc.) \nSynopsis: \nChoosing anode sled locations is a critical step in the ICCP retrofit design process. DESCRIPTION:  \nVenue: Lancaster Hall Hotel\, 35 Craven Terrace\, Bayswater\, London \nSpeaker: Kevin Harold\, Paintel Ltd – Director\, ICATS – Senior Specialist Trainer \nKevin tells of his journey as a painter from the era when PPE was non-existent\, how he moved into industrial painting\, became a painting inspector and having joined the Tamar Bridge strengthening and widening project\, found the painters could not paint so he taught them. \nEven as late as the early 21st Century clients were not getting what they wanted in terms of standards or quality. \nIn 2006 he became aware of the Industrial Coating Applicator Training Scheme (ICATS)\, registered his company\, got his workforce trained and subsequently became a trainer himself. \nThe operation and benefits of ICATS will be explained notably the evidence that the training results in major savings from less repeat work and the advantages gained by the asset owners and operators. \nKevin started Paintel in 2001 after 25 years in the Paint Industry. His primary expertise is in the development of novel in situ diagnostic techniques and standard test methods for assessment of corrosion and material degradation in energy applications. Gareth has a strong track record of delivering innovative solutions to engineering problems with demonstrable impact on industry in a range of sectors\, including oil and gas\, power generation and electrochemical energy conversion and storage. He is the author of over 150 publications and is currently serving a two year term as President of the Institute of Corrosion. \nSummary \nLike many professional societies\, the Institute of Corrosion faces an ongoing challenge to communicate and deliver tangible benefits to its members. At the same time\, the world is changing at an unprecedented rate\, driven by a growing awareness of the environmental impact of fossil fuels\, population growth and rapid technological innovation. This talk will provide an overview of the external factors that could have a major influence on shaping the future of the Institute\, including the transition to low carbon energy\, the digital revolution\, the growing generational gap and the UK Industrial Strategy. He is Managing Director of KeyTech since 1999\, a company involved in corrosion and materials consultancy and development of innovative technologies for hydrocarbon production. He is a visiting Professor at Leeds University and UCL. Latterly within BP for 18 years\, he held the positions of Team Leader (Corrosion and Materials) and Technology Manager (Corrosion Free BP). He combines his current roles with academic activities at various universities including Leeds\, Manchester and other institutions.\nBijan is a leading authority on oilfield corrosion and materials and has more than 60 publications relating to structural integrity and degradation\, materials selection and steel development. \nSpecialties: Bijan has edited two key publications on CO2 corrosion\, established a new methodology in material design for sour service which is now included in ISO15156. He has recently produced an EFC publication on pipeline corrosion management. Bijan is Fellows of NACE\, Institutions of Corrosion and Materials\, recipient of NACE 2007 Technical Achievement Award\, Certified NACE Corrosion Specialist and a NACE Instructor. He is the chairman of EFC Working Party on Pipeline Corrosion Management the EFC.
