SUMMARY:ICorr President Talk - How can the Institute of Corrosion adapt to thrive in a rapidly changing world?
DESCRIPTION:Bio \nDr Gareth Hinds is NPL Fellow and Science Area Leader in the Electrochemistry Group at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). His primary expertise is in the development of novel in situ diagnostic techniques and standard test methods for assessment of corrosion and material degradation in energy applications. Gareth has a strong track record of delivering innovative solutions to engineering problems with demonstrable impact on industry in a range of sectors\, including oil and gas\, power generation and electrochemical energy conversion and storage. He is the author of over 150 publications and is currently serving a two year term as President of the Institute of Corrosion. \nSummary \nLike many professional societies\, the Institute of Corrosion faces an ongoing challenge to communicate and deliver tangible benefits to its members. At the same time\, the world is changing at an unprecedented rate\, driven by a growing awareness of the environmental impact of fossil fuels\, population growth and rapid technological innovation. This talk will provide an overview of the external factors that could have a major influence on shaping the future of the Institute\, including the transition to low carbon energy\, the digital revolution\, the growing generational gap and the UK Industrial Strategy. It is critical that the Institute anticipates the need to adapt to these drivers and establish a clear strategy to ensure its future sustainability. A number of potential ideas will be explored during the talk and opened to the floor for discussion.

SUMMARY:Evening of Case Study Presentation Young Engineer Programme 2018
DESCRIPTION:Evening of Case Study Presentation Young Engineer Programme 2018 is Case Study Presentations which is the culmination to this year Young Engineer Programme. \nThe Case Study which as you can see is a difficult scenario to offer a solution. The candidates have been split into teams assigned mentors and asked to present their case having demonstrated the following:\n1. Review the exchanger design/ operating data and propose credible root causes for the degradation of the 1st stage tube sheet.\n2. Define the potential failure scenarios for degradation\n3. If the cooler were taken out service\, describe a testing scope to confirm the root cause of the corrosion damage. Note: The Scope can include destructive methods\n4. Explain how you would perform a corrosion risk assessment to help the installation’s management team determine if the train can be restarted. How would you determine the scope the ongoing integrity surveillance  plan to support a restart and what would the scope include?\n5. What mitigation options could applied to prolong the service life of the heat exchanger? Critically review the list of mitigation options and present case for the method (s) that would be implemented at site.\n6. Using the design and operating data provided\, present alternative materials of construction for a replacement heat exchanger and describe the basis for the selection. Note that the heat exchanger design may be changed to accommodate the material selected but the design parameters and foot print should be broadly similar to the original. \nThe winning team will be rewarded with an expenses paid trip to Nashville to attend the NACE Conference 2019. It is not a holiday\, they will be expected to report on the Technical Sessions they have attended and what they have learnt from them. There will of course be a lot of networking and introduction whilst they are in the environment. \nVenue: Imperial College\, The lecture Theatre Rooms 163 and 164 \nRSVP: Imma Mobbs at imma.mobbs@c-i-m.co.uk or icorrlondon@gmail.com \nIt is clearly an even NOT TO BE MISSED and we would really appreciate your support \nHosts : \nGeorge Winning \nTrevor Osborne \nDavid Mobbs \n

SUMMARY:London Branch March Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Technology Advancements in Integrity Management of Storage Tanks \nBy \nJohn Lilley and Mark Stone \nSonomatic Ltd \n The industry is well versed with Corrosion mapping of vessels and pipework but Corrosion Mapping of Storage Tanks has always relied on “dropping the tank” which has an impact on production and risk. The industry does not like working in confined spaces and there are moves towards zero-man entry over the lifetime of storage and process vessels. \nStorage Tanks are susceptible to a range of internal and external corrosion processes. As such inspection plays a major role in effective integrity management of Storage Tanks. Historically\, inspection of the floor has relied on emptying the tank and personnel entry for cleaning and inspection. Internal inspection for other mechanisms also takes place at this time. This means tanks can be out of service for significant periods of time. \nSonomatic have developed a range of methods for inspection of Storage Tanks while in-service. A key element is robotic cleaning and inspection of the floor. This forms part of a comprehensive inspection in which the tank shell is also inspected non-intrusively using ultrasonic corrosion mapping supported by statistical analysis. The presentation will give an overview of the technologies involved\, how these link into more efficient integrity management of Storage Tanks and will also include a case study of field application. \nA fascinating not to be missed presentation \n For further information please contact \nicorrlondon@gmail.com \n
