SUMMARY:Aberdeen Branch Event - ICorr Technical Event
DESCRIPTION:Date: 30/03/2021 \nEvent Type: ICorr Technical Event \nSpeaker: Dr George Sergi – VECTOR. Galvanic Corrosion Control of Reinforced Concrete: \nTopic: Galvanic Corrosion / CP Control of Reinforced Concrete; Lessons learnt from 20 years of Site Trials. Sacrificial anodes have been used in reinforced concrete structures for up to 20 years. This presentation reviews the performance of the oldest set of anodes used in enhanced patch repairs where anodes were placed at the periphery of the patch at around 600 mm spacing on centre. It demonstrates\, from results of current output and steel de-polarisation levels that the repair system is still functioning adequately. These prototype anodes\, designed for a 10-year life\, have continued to deliver a reduced but significant current complying with currently accepted criteria. The overall reduction in current was found to be adequately described by an ‘anode aging’ model where the current delivered is halved over constant time intervals\, enabling determination of an ‘aging-factor’. \nTime: 18:00: Finish* at 19:30 \nLocation: Webinar: Login Details will be provided following Pre-registration (as attached Flyer). This Webinar Event is Free and Open to all ICorr Members / Non – Members. \nFor registration: Please contact amirattarchi@gmail.com\n – Giving your Full Name and Stating – ICorr Member or Non- Member

SUMMARY:Optimizing impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) anode sled locations for offshore jacket structure retrofits
DESCRIPTION:Optimizing impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) anode sled locations for offshore jacket structure retrofits.\n\nPresenter: Dr Matthew Taylor (Deepwater Corrosion Services\, Inc.) \nSynopsis: \nChoosing anode sled locations is a critical step in the ICCP retrofit design process. Typically\, a CP engineer locates sleds based on site plans\, experience\, intuition\, and some simple equations evaluating “remoteness” criteria.\n3D CP Multiphysics software (both BE and FE) models have been used to evaluate the performance of a given CP design.  These models\, typically proprietary in construction and calibrated by historical structure polarization data give general indications of system performance\, often ignoring the effects of ICCP on associated pipelines.  Any attempted optimization procedure involves “guess and check” techniques\, with no method of validating the results.\nPipeline CP measurements made during and after ICCP system commissioning has revealed that pipelines were more affected than previously believed given the “remoteness” criteria traditionally used.\nThis talk describes algorithms and analysis to optimize the placement\, quantity and output of anode sleds to improve system efficiency\, minimize risk to pipelines and reduce cost. \nAbout the Presenter \n\nDr Matthew Taylor is a corrosion engineer with a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University and INSA de Lyon.  Dr. Taylor applies corrosion science to offshore infrastructure world-wide\, developing technologies and custom solutions to overcome a variety of challenging corrosion issues.  He has been studying diverse corrosion control technologies since 2005 and focused on the field of offshore corrosion and cathodic protection since 2012.  He currently resides in Houston\, TX \nTo register and receive a link to the presentation click here: \nhttps://forms.gle/pLdDZXUUvYb92GSq6 \nDownload Information Leaflet

SUMMARY:Aberdeen Branch Event - Virtual In-Line Inspection for Corrosion Management in Un-piggable Pipelines
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 27th April 2021 at 12:00 – 13:00 UK BSTime \nVirtual In-Line Inspection for Corrosion Management in Un-piggable Pipelines \n1 hr | Free \nMichael Smith | Senior Engineer Data Scientist | ROSEN UK \nOver the past 30 years\, ILI data have been collected all around the world. Although pipelines are diverse in their characteristics\, many share similar risk profiles for common pipeline threats such as external and internal corrosion. This has led the industry naturally towards machine learning as a complementary corrosion monitoring solution for pipelines that cannot be inspected using ILI. For a given uninspected pipeline\, we can source data for similar inspected pipelines and use machine learning algorithms to generate predictive models. The results of a “Virtual ILI” create clear justification for planning actual inspections or maintenance in challenging pipelines. \nEvent now open for Registration \nDownload Webinar Leaflet

SUMMARY:Aberdeen Branch Event - Modelling Corrosion and Corrosion Protection
DESCRIPTION:Modelling Corrosion and Corrosion Protection\n1 hr | Free \nRoss Hubble | Applications Engineer | COMSOL \nMost corrosion occurs due to electrochemical reaction processes taking place underwater and in wet or humid environments. Modelling corrosion allows engineers and scientists to investigate these processes\, gain an understanding of the extent to which corrosion could occur over the lifetime of a structure and implement preventative measures to inhibit electrochemical corrosion\, in order to protect their structures. In this presentation\, we will discuss some of the benefits of corrosion modelling and what kind of simulations can be performed. We will start out with a brief introduction to corrosion simulations and how the theory can be applied to a simulation in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software. After the introduction\, we will show a couple of examples within corrosion and corrosion protection. Ross works as an Applications Engineer at COMSOL UK. He graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2010 with a MEng in Chemical Engineering and then carried out his PhD investigating carbon oxide hydrogenation reactions. \nEvent now open for Registration\nDownload Webinar Leaflet

SUMMARY:Aberdeen Branch Event - Developments in remote magnetic monitoring of carbon steel pipelines to locate and measure abnormal stress
DESCRIPTION:Developments in remote magnetic monitoring of carbon steel pipelines to locate and measure abnormal stress\n1 hr | Free \nHamed Habibi | Spier Hunter \nThis presentation outlines recent developments in an emerging non-intrusive sensing technique developed to detect localised abnormal pipe wall stress by mapping variations in the earth’s magnetic field around pipelines. Corrosion\, metallurgical defects and ground movements result in areas of increased localised stress in pressurised pipelines and a direct relationship has been described mathematically relating magnetic field characteristics to the magnitude of stress due to magnetostriction. The presentation explores how measurements of remote magnetic field can be applied to define the location of defects in operational pipelines\, quantify the associated abnormal stress\, report the position of girth welds and to concurrently report a 3-dimensional map of the pipeline route. \nEvent now open for Registration\nDownload Webinar Leaflet

SUMMARY:Aberdeen Branch Event - Addressing the risk of Hydrogen-Induced Stress Cracking on pipelines
DESCRIPTION:Addressing the risk of Hydrogen-Induced Stress Cracking on pipelines\n1 hr | Free \nDaniel Sandana | Principal Engineer | ROSEN UK \nAddressing the risk of Hydrogen-Induced Stress Cracking (HISC) on pipelines\, Daniel Sandana | Principal Engineer | ROSEN UK. The role that hydrogen could play in the transition to low-carbon economy has refuelled the emphasis on hydrogen-related cracking mechanisms\, and how these could affect the integrity of the energy infrastructure. Hydrogen-cracking mechanisms can nonetheless occur on our existing pipelines\, when the effect of CP or H2S is considered. Such mechanisms will actually occur at a greater scale\, than what would be considered when looking at the sole effect of gaseous hydrogen. The purpose here is to get a better understanding of the problem of HISC due to CP on materials\, used onshore and subsea\, and how to address it. \nEvent now open for Registration\nDownload Webinar Leaflet

SUMMARY:London Branch joint meeting with LMS (in-person/online)
DESCRIPTION:To be held: Lancaster Hall Hotel\, 35 Craven Terrace\, London W2 3EL \n“Meeting Todays Materials Challenges to Enable Low Carbon Hydrogen Production at Scale”\, Stephen Shapcott\, Senior Principal Materials and Corrosion Engineer\, Johnson Matthey. \nThis talk will give an overview of the fundamental materials degradation mechanisms to be considered in methane hydrogen reforming production routes. As public pressure to limit global warming continues to rise\, governments\, policy makers and regulators are looking for the most effective ways to achieve the target set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to keep the global temperature increase to below 1.5°C above pre‑industrial levels. \nThere is a growing realisation that hydrogen has a vital role to play\, particularly to decarbonise sectors and applications that are otherwise extremely difficult to abate\, such as industrial processes\, heavy duty freight movement\, dispatchable power generation and heating applications. Hydrogen will also provide long-term (for instance seasonal) energy storage\, enabling much greater uptake of renewable power generation\, which itself is a key prerequisite of the clean energy transition. \nWhile hydrogen can be produced through the electrolysis of water\, most of the hydrogen produced today is manufactured by steam methane reforming\, in which\, at high temperatures natural gas is converted to hydrogen and CO2. This CO2 can be captured or diverted in such a way as to not be released into the atmosphere such as through Carbon Capture\, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). \nProduction of bulk low-cost\, low carbon hydrogen from fossil resources is an integral part of meeting global net zero ambitions immediately with proven methods\, while immature zero carbon hydrogen production technologies are developed. Building capacity to supply the required demand for hydrogen will require huge investment in new hydrogen production capacity globally. \nMethane reforming requires extreme environments for materials of construction. \nPlease complete the form below to register your interest to attend. \nRegistrants will have the option to attend the meeting in person or remotely. Please note the talk is scheduled to start at 6.30 pm following networking at 6.00pm. \nhttps://forms.gle/L2mBJmryhCRNyPwf7 \nIf you have any questions email icorrlondon@gmail.com \n

SUMMARY:Aberdeen Branch Event - Technical Event
DESCRIPTION:Company / Speaker: University of Calgary / Professor Y. Frank Cheng\nZoom Event – More Information to Follow \nInternal Corrosion of Pipelines: Mechanisms\, Modelling and Management \nInternal corrosion of pipelines is a complex phenomenon\, and the complexity arises from the fact that multiple chemical and electrochemical reactions occur simultaneously in the environment where numerous factors affecting the corrosion processes have interrelated each other. A fundamental understanding of the phenomenon is essential to modelling\, prediction and management of the corrosion processes\, providing recommendations to industry for improved pipeline integrity management. \nThis talk includes contents which are based the author’s extensive research experiences and interactions with industry in the last decades. A thermodynamic model was developed to determine the electrochemical anodic and cathodic reactions occurring during internal corrosion of pipelines under given conditions. Parametric effects such as solution pH\, CO2 partial pressure\, temperature\, etc. were considered. The corrosion kinetics is quantified by considering the synergism of mass transfer\, charge transfer and film formation in the corrosion processes. In addition to uniform corrosion\, localised corrosion under deposit is paid much attention. The unique role of microorganism\, particularly sulphate-reducing bacteria\, in initiation and growth of corrosion pits was investigated. Numerical models were developed by integration of electrochemical corrosion with fluid hydrodynamics in the pipeline\, enabling prediction of the location of corrosion occurrence and the corrosion rate over a long-term period of service. In addition to the multi-physics field coupling model for corrosion process simulation\, conventional solution chemistry model and fluid mechanics-based model were also proposed for quick evaluation and prediction of internal corrosion rate. \nDownload Webinar Flyer \nRegistration for the Event
