However\, this talk will highlight new energy sectors and where corrosion will continue to have a negative impact on such sectors. \nBill Hedges (UK) FNACE\, FICorr\, CEng has 34 years’ experience of materials\, metallurgy and corrosion in the oil and gas and materials industries. Bill spent 23 years of his career in corrosion at BP\, reaching the ranks BP’s Chief Corrosion Engineer. Bill has 35 publications\, 3 Patents and 1 book (as co-author) in the field of materials and corrosion. \nThis presentation covers three themes including (i) A career in corrosion\, (ii) Corrosion and materials challenges facing hydrocarbon production\, and finally (iii) How corrosion can impact the future of renewable energies. \nThe talk summarises that although significant progress and great advancements have been made in the field of corrosion control and management\, many challenges remain as we embark on a joint global venture to achieve net-zero; the requirement for future innovation in the energy sectors is more important than ever. DESCRIPTION:January 13\, 2022 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm\n“Life extension of offshore platforms\, through retrofit CP design assisted by modelling’’ – Talk by Dr Paolo Marcassoli\, Cathodic Protection and Inspections Manager at Cescor\, and Istvan Bartha\, Independent Subsea Consultant.  \nThousands of permanent offshore structures for oil and gas production in the world\, including steel jacket platforms\, are reaching or have exceeded their original design life. They require extension of life or re-qualification programs to prolong their operating life. Cathodic protection (CP) is one of the issues to be carefully managed as part of this process. In case the original CP system cannot guarantee the planned residual life\, a retrofit intervention shall be designed and executed.  The design of CP retrofit systems\, although technically adhering to the stipulations of the applicable codes\, does not necessarily follow the criteria and approaches adopted for new facilities\, as the intervention requires to be executed with the structure in-place\, and this has a strong impact on installation requirements and costs. Accordingly\, dedicated CP expertise has been developed for retrofit applications\, aimed to select the most convenient system. A tailored approach is followed\, by considering the most appropriate design parameters\, affected by the present polarisation conditions\, presence of marine growth and calcareous deposit on the structure. Finite Element Method (FEM) and Boundary Element Method (BEM) modelling are extensively and successfully used as part of the selection and optimisation of galvanic anode or impressed current systems. \nIn this presentation\, the definition of CP design parameters and the optimisation activity assisted by modelling are illustrated from the viewpoint of real industrial application; taking into consideration limitations imposed during the installation phase. \nAbout the presenters: \nDr. Paolo Marcassoli (Cescor – Cathodic Protection and Inspections Manager) \nPaolo Marcassoli has fifteen years’ experience in materials and corrosion engineering and cathodic protection engineering gained in academic field and the onshore and offshore oil & gas industry\, offshore wind\, civil and infrastructures. After 6 years of academic and research work at University of Bergamo\, he joined Cescor in January 2012 and he was Manager of business line Products in July 2012\, Production Manager in August 2013 and Inspections and Production Manager in October 2014. \nHe holds the position of Cathodic Protection and Inspections Manager since April 2019. \nHe primarily carries out activities in the fields of CP design and FEM modeling\, monitoring and CP inspections\, corrosion control. \nIstvan Bartha (Independent Subsea Consultant) \nIstvan Bartha is an experienced Subsea Integrity Engineer with over 20 years of experience in field of subsea\, pipelines\, structures and bridge engineering\, who participated in major Oil and Gas projects ranging from concept and design stages through to fabrication\, installation and operation of new and ageing assets. \nFollowing obtaining his BSc degree in Metallurgical Engineering\, he worked 7 years in the bridge construction industry in Hungary\, followed by moving in the UK in 2008 to pursue a career in the British Oil & Gas industry. In Britain\, he gained experience in onshore and offshore application of Cathodic Protection systems working for Pipeline Maintenance Ltd\, then joined Wood where worked as a Senior Integrity Engineer\, responsible for development of Integrity Management Strategies for various Clients. DESCRIPTION:Company / Speaker: University of Leeds / Trevor Hughes (Schlumberger Cambridge Research)\, Evgeny Barmatov (Schlumberger Cambridge Research) and Richard Barker (University of Leeds) \nZoom Event – more details to follow \nAdvanced once-through flow cell methodology for validation of a new ‘staged’ inhibition approach for matrix acidizing treatments \nSchlumberger recently introduced and patented a new staged acid corrosion inhibitor (ACI) treatment concept for application in matrix acidizing treatments. The staged treatment concept recognises that treatments which employ a fixed dosage of corrosion inhibitor may not be optimal in terms of their efficiency. The concept proposes staged pumping of a first fluid composition designed to establish a persistent inhibitor film (Stage 1) and a second fluid composition to maintain the film and its associated inhibited corrosion rate (Stage 2). The staged ACI concept has the potential to provide enhanced corrosion protection of wellbore casing and coiled tubing (CT) materials whilst using the same total quantity of inhibitor compared to conventional treatments. \nIn the present paper\, a bespoke\, electrochemical\, millifluidic once-through flow cell was used for validation of the staged ACI concept. A once-through flow cell enables testing in a continuously flowing environment whilst maintaining a fresh acid solution\, a controllable supply of inhibitor\, and eliminating any contact of the electrode with the atmosphere. The system was used to quantify changes in corrosion behaviour during continuous flow and during transitions from the first to second stage inhibitor dosages\, to find optimal inhibitor concentration for film-forming and film maintenance stages and to investigate the effect of metal pre-corrosion on inhibitor performance for carbon steel used as wellbore casing and CT materials \n

DESCRIPTION:“A diversified approach to utilizing volatile corrosion Inhibitors (VCI)’’ – Talk by Philip Low\, European/Middle East/GCC Business Development Manager\, Zerust Oil & Gas. \nThe presentation will shed light on various approaches using volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI’) technology in mitigating corrosion on pipelines\, pipeline casing protection and above ground storage  tanks. \nFinally\, a novel methodology for addressing CUI and Scab Repairs using a self-amalgamating inhibitor  fused tape: \nWhat are VCIs and How Do They Work.   \nAn explainer and short animation on how the technology works in a 3 phased protective approach. \nAbove Ground Storage Tanks (AST’s)   \nWe never know when\, but ultimately all CP systems under storage tanks fail. When they do\, there are not  very many easy or inexpensive ways to repair or replace them. Whether you are building new tanks or  involved in an API 653 inspection and the data indicates that the CP is not protecting everywhere\, it is  possible to install a backup plan. \nThis presentation will examine the installation of VCI delivery systems for various civil configurations and  geometries. \nWith changes to regulations in the US\, VCI can be used to mitigate corrosion under tank floors in  conjunction with CP or in many cases\, in lieu of CP. Information on the delivery system options will be  presented\, and data demonstrating the symbiotic relationship between VCI and CP will be shared. There  are several delivery system designs based on the foundation design of the tank. These minor modifications to a tank foundation can significantly reduce cost and downtime in the future. \nSummary: What do you do when your Cathodic Protection system does not last until the 653 Inspection?  Can you build in a backup system inexpensively and easily? This discussion will examine options which  can be utilized or installed during a current inspection or construction which may enable the enhancement  of a weak or failed CP system\, prior to the next inspection. \nPipeline Casing Protection and Using VCIs  \nNACE and PHMSA (DOT) have ratified the use Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI’s) as a corrosion  mitigation strategy\, \nThis presentation will focus on what the regulations from NACE\, CEOCOR and PHMSA (DOT) have  ratified the use Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI’s) as a corrosion mitigation strategy\, and how they  describe Multiphase delivery options including: “Dry Powder”\, “Gel” and “Slurry” applications and when to  choose each. Case studies will be shared from the most common Gel applications. \nVCI’s to Prevent Generalized Internal and Microbial Internal Corrosion in Facility Pipes  \nA recurring issue during the construction and commissioning of facility pipe assets is the creation of internal  corrosion threats due to leftover hydrotest water. Available methods for removing the water entirely\, or  applying inhibitor chemicals to the hydrotest medium\, are time-consuming and expensive. A major Oil and  Gas client applied vaporous corrosion inhibitor (VCI) chemicals in lieu of other methods which would  mitigate the internal corrosion threats. This method proved to be very effective at mitigating both biological  and generalized internal corrosion. A case study will be shared. \nA Novel Methodology For Addressing Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) and Scab Repairs Utilizing  Corrosion Inhibitor Impregnated Self-Amalgamating Silicone Based Tape  \nZerust Inhibitor Tape (ZIF) was specifically designed to combat the many areas to address when we  evaluate a corrosion protection mechanism for CUI and Scab repairs\, the main challenge is creating a  physical barrier between the steel substrate and insulation medium. \nZIF provides this barrier in the form of a robust silicone based self-amalgamating tape\, in addition to the  robust outer nature of the tape; it is also impregnated with a corrosion inhibitor to combat any potential  water or sweating of the line. \nFinally\, the tape is translucent to allow ease during inspection and due to ZIF having no glues/resins/primers for the adhesion mechanism; the tape is easily removed for allowing inspection  cycles. The tape has also recently passed ISO-19277 \nPreservation of assets during idle or mothballed periods including spare parts and critical spare  parts  \nOil platforms including MDU’s\, fixed\, land and FPSOs are an integral part of modern day oil production. Not  surprisingly\, the number of rigs in operation at any given time is tied directly to the price of crude oil. The collapse  of oil prices in 2020 due to the global pandemic has caused a large number of rigs to be mothballed albeit cold\,  warm or hot stacked as well as many high value critical spares to sit idle for prolonged periods of time\, which of  course they are never designed or engineered to do so. \nAn offshore oil platform is a very expensive asset\, as is all associated parts and equipment; the average cost of an  offshore rig is around $650+ million. As such\, it is critical to put in place a robust preservation strategy to  safeguard and prolong asset/equipment life. The purpose of the Study was to perform a detailed review of the corrosion monitoring and mitigation systems and to propose any required upgrades to ensure world class / excellent asset integrity performance. \nThe approach taken to the Study was to follow the UK Health & Safety Executive’s guidance for “Managing Health and Safety”\, HSG65 (2013)\, of PLAN-DO-CHECK-ACT\, which considers both Technical and Systems approaches associated with managing assets safely. This is a closed loop planetary model commencing with a high-level Corporate Policy for health and safety\, under which there is a Policy and Plan for managing corrosion and integrity. Hundreds of thousands of Flint residents were exposed to dangerous levels of lead and outbreaks of Legionnaires disease that caused deaths and long term health problems. This talk will focus on the decisions that led to this outcome\, the corrosion engineering around ensuring safe water sources and the importance of ensuring a greater understanding of corrosion issues in relation to environmental issues. \nBen Moorhouse is a materials\, corrosion and inspection engineer with a decade’s worth of experience involved with various engineering projects and operations. He studied at Imperial College and completed a PhD focusing on thermodynamic processes to remove impurities from titanium alloys. As part of his day to day\, he is Chairperson of the London Branch of the Institute of Corrosion\, a Fellow of the Institute of Materials\, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and a Chartered Engineer. DESCRIPTION:Company / Speaker: University of Manchester / Dr.  Robert Lindsay\nZoom Event – More Information to follow \nCorrosion Inhibition: Separating Fact from Fiction \nFor more than a century\, surface-active organic species have been employed to control the corrosion of metals/alloys.  Given suitable selection\, such corrosion inhibitors have proven to be highly effective\, preventing significant degradation of metallic substrates even in highly aggressive environments.  Nevertheless\, there are still considerable gaps in fundamental knowledge of corrosion inhibitor functionality\, severely restricting further innovation.  For example\, corrosion inhibition in acidic solutions is widely reported to be the result of the adsorption of a monolayer of surface-actives.  This description\, however\, can be considered to be largely a cartoon\, as there is a significant lack of supporting experimental evidence.  Many key details remain uncertain\, including the surface chemistry of the inhibited substrate\, the structure of the adsorbed layer\, and even its surface coverage.  Such information is key input for researchers attempting to predict corrosion inhibitor functionality through atomic scale interfacial modelling\, and so identify next generation chemistries \nIn this presentation\, following an introduction to corrosion inhibition in acidic solutions\, I will discuss effort to reveal details of corrosion inhibitor-substrate interactions through detailed interface characterisation.  For example\, I will discuss recent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results\, indicating that the chemistry of the inhibited interface is dependent on both inhibitor concentration and acid identity.  In addition\, I will present data demonstrating that surface adsorption is not always sufficient for achieving the target corrosion inhibition efficiency\, i.e. it will be shown that a surface-active can be bound to the surface\, but not lead to sufficient reduction in corrosion rate.  Moreover\, I will use XPS data to argue that the widely adopted approach of determining the standard Gibbs energy of adsorption of a corrosion inhibitor from measured inhibitor efficiencies is flawed\, and so should not be relied upon as a tool for corrosion inhibitor selection

The Cullen inquiry led to safety case regulations being established and we moved to a goal setting safety regime; characterised by the introduction of PFEER and DCR – put in place to ensure that duty holders of offshore installations deal appropriately with the requirements to provide measures to prevent\, mitigate and respond to major accidents.\nPerformance standards based around Functionality\, Availability\, Reliability and Survivability became the norm. Today\, these are referred to as Safety and Environmental Critical Elements (SECE) and according to the regulations\, can be hardware or software\, including management systems.\nSetting performance standards for certain types of hardware is challenging. A performance standard for a pipe or vessel may state that it shouldn’t leak. We shouldn’t be waiting for items to leak before we consider them to have failed as SECEs. \nHardware shouldn’t be the principal SECE. We claim to be carrying out assurance but are doing little more than inspection. This incorrectly leaves the assurance elements of the process to the verifier. \nChanging the emphasis of SECEs to focus on management systems and Integrity Management Systems (IMS) would deliver increased efficiency and reduced costs. \nIf it can be demonstrated that the IMS is well formulated and correctly implemented this will automatically confirm that the elements it covers are inspected\, their functionality confirmed\, anomalies managed\, repairs carried out\, backlogs controlled\, planning addressed\, and their condition endorsed. Thus removing the need for the specific assurance of individual items.

Event is Free of Charge to attend.\nSpeaker: Roland Anderson – Axess Corrosion\, Texas\nSubject: Internal Corrosion Monitoring Systems – Advanced safety through innovation \nAbout the Talk: Internal Corrosion Monitoring Systems – Enhanced Safety through Innovation This talk focuses on new solutions to problems related to intrusive corrosion monitoring systems. This is an opportunity to learn about the work of Axess Corrosion and to evaluate innovations relating to the safety of intrusive corrosion monitoring devices. Wherever possible we have ensured that we have a very low impact on work procedures\, but a significant impact on risk assessment. The purpose is to grow user confidence in intrusive monitoring so that the benefits of integrated systems can be realized. We’ll first look at some examples of incidents ranging in severity from loss of containment to fatality and the look at the design changes that can provide new layers of protection and prevent reoccurrence. The specific products covered include retrieval equipment for monitoring devices changeouts under pressure as well as the access fittings that house the devices. We’ll present the benefits achieved from major operators across the globe and the impact on intrusive internal monitoring campaigns. User feedback and references will be presented along with details of pilot projects from an Operational Viewpoint. We’ll also discuss the potential for repurposing access fittings and how to deal with them if they are no longer required for your monitoring program. \nBiography: Roland Anderson has over 20 years’ experience in the Oil & Gas industry focused on internal corrosion monitoring programs across the globe.
