SUMMARY:An integrated molecular approach to microbial monitoring.
DESCRIPTION:The National Collection of Industrial Food and Marine Bacteria: Most people are quite surprised to learn that such a thing exists but our collection includes bacteria isolated from all kinds of places including hippopotamus bathing water and the dental plaque of a baboon. Bacteria from the collection have been used in a broad range of research and industrial applications\, and the collection has also had a long-standing connection with the oil and gas industry.\nMost Probable Number (MPN) demonstration. The importance of including sessile and planktonic samples and the issue of NORM contaminated coupons.\nMolecular lab – demo of what is involved in the different molecular techniques.\n\nEvent Type: Industrial Visit- 1 \nDate/Day: 3rd September\, Tuesday \nPlace: NCIMB Laboratories\, Ferguson Building\, Craibstone Estate\, Bucksburn\, Aberdeen AB21 9YA \nTime: 18:00 Registration and 18:30 Presentations \nSpeaker: Dr Daniel Swan NCIMB \nTour and demonstrations\, (rotating in groups of 10)

SUMMARY:ICorr President Talk - How can the Institute of Corrosion adapt to thrive in a rapidly changing world?
DESCRIPTION:Bio \nDr Gareth Hinds is NPL Fellow and Science Area Leader in the Electrochemistry Group at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). His primary expertise is in the development of novel in situ diagnostic techniques and standard test methods for assessment of corrosion and material degradation in energy applications. Gareth has a strong track record of delivering innovative solutions to engineering problems with demonstrable impact on industry in a range of sectors\, including oil and gas\, power generation and electrochemical energy conversion and storage. He is the author of over 150 publications and is currently serving a two year term as President of the Institute of Corrosion. \nSummary \nLike many professional societies\, the Institute of Corrosion faces an ongoing challenge to communicate and deliver tangible benefits to its members. At the same time\, the world is changing at an unprecedented rate\, driven by a growing awareness of the environmental impact of fossil fuels\, population growth and rapid technological innovation. This talk will provide an overview of the external factors that could have a major influence on shaping the future of the Institute\, including the transition to low carbon energy\, the digital revolution\, the growing generational gap and the UK Industrial Strategy. It is critical that the Institute anticipates the need to adapt to these drivers and establish a clear strategy to ensure its future sustainability. A number of potential ideas will be explored during the talk and opened to the floor for discussion.

SUMMARY:Pipework Corrosion Prediction and Reality
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that the speaker at the January the 10th meeting at Imperial College will be Dr Patricia Conder of Sonomatic. She will be giving a talk on internal corrosion of pipework.  as we all know this can be patchy and unpredictable on a small scale and although corrosion predictions for pipework focus on morphology\, rate and likelihood\, the spatial distribution is not generally considered. Inspection of pipework typically covers a small proportion of overall area\, utilising manual ultrasonic inspection and radiography. The effectiveness of the inspection being determined by the “Find It First” challenge. \nIf and when corrosion is found\, a local corrosion rate is generated for an individual location and there is a “Bottom-Up” integrity response. This talk looks at the advantages of taking a fresh look at the results of pipework inspection from a “Top-Down” viewpoint and how this can improve the understanding of corrosion manifestations\, and impact on future inspection to make it more effective and efficient. \nCome along to the meeting on the 10th of January doors in the Skempton Building open at 6 pm\, the evening offers refreshments and great networking opportunities to members and non members alike. \n

SUMMARY:Corrosion under Insulation - Review of Coatings Standards NACE T516 and ISO19277
DESCRIPTION:The meeting will take place on 29th of November\, at the Rosen Group starting at 6pm for networking followed by a presentation / discussion at 6.30pm delivered by Neil Wilds\, a thought leader in coatings for corrosion under insulation. \nNeil has 32yrs experience in Coatings Industry working on high solids epoxies/ testing and CUI/Insulation Coatings. Currently Technical Marketing Manager for Sherwin Williams and a committee member on TG516 Standard Practice for Evaluating Protective Coatings for Use Under Insulation. \nPresentation Overview: \nThere have been many iterations of test methods from coatings’ companies over the last 10-15 yrs looking at prequalification of CUI coatings. To a large extent this has not been standardised and accepted by the major Oil & Gas end users. Therefore over the last 3-4 years two CUI test method/prequalification standards have been worked on to solve this issue. This presentation will go through these tests methods and will hopefully raise some good conversation which can then be taken back to the standards committees.

SUMMARY:Evening of Case Study Presentation Young Engineer Programme 2018
DESCRIPTION:Evening of Case Study Presentation Young Engineer Programme 2018 is Case Study Presentations which is the culmination to this year Young Engineer Programme. \nThe Case Study which as you can see is a difficult scenario to offer a solution. The candidates have been split into teams assigned mentors and asked to present their case having demonstrated the following:\n1. Review the exchanger design/ operating data and propose credible root causes for the degradation of the 1st stage tube sheet.\n2. Define the potential failure scenarios for degradation\n3. If the cooler were taken out service\, describe a testing scope to confirm the root cause of the corrosion damage. Note: The Scope can include destructive methods\n4. Explain how you would perform a corrosion risk assessment to help the installation’s management team determine if the train can be restarted. How would you determine the scope the ongoing integrity surveillance  plan to support a restart and what would the scope include?\n5. What mitigation options could applied to prolong the service life of the heat exchanger? Critically review the list of mitigation options and present case for the method (s) that would be implemented at site.\n6. Using the design and operating data provided\, present alternative materials of construction for a replacement heat exchanger and describe the basis for the selection. Note that the heat exchanger design may be changed to accommodate the material selected but the design parameters and foot print should be broadly similar to the original. \nThe winning team will be rewarded with an expenses paid trip to Nashville to attend the NACE Conference 2019. It is not a holiday\, they will be expected to report on the Technical Sessions they have attended and what they have learnt from them. There will of course be a lot of networking and introduction whilst they are in the environment. \nVenue: Imperial College\, The lecture Theatre Rooms 163 and 164 \nRSVP: Imma Mobbs at imma.mobbs@c-i-m.co.uk or icorrlondon@gmail.com \nIt is clearly an even NOT TO BE MISSED and we would really appreciate your support \nHosts : \nGeorge Winning \nTrevor Osborne \nDavid Mobbs \n
