DESCRIPTION:Modelling Corrosion and Corrosion Protection\n1 hr | Free \nRoss Hubble | Applications Engineer | COMSOL \nMost corrosion occurs due to electrochemical reaction processes taking place underwater and in wet or humid environments. Modelling corrosion allows engineers and scientists to investigate these processes\, gain an understanding of the extent to which corrosion could occur over the lifetime of a structure and implement preventative measures to inhibit electrochemical corrosion\, in order to protect their structures. In this presentation\, we will discuss some of the benefits of corrosion modelling and what kind of simulations can be performed. We will start out with a brief introduction to corrosion simulations and how the theory can be applied to a simulation in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software. After the introduction\, we will show a couple of examples within corrosion and corrosion protection. Ross works as an Applications Engineer at COMSOL UK. Corrosion\, metallurgical defects and ground movements result in areas of increased localised stress in pressurised pipelines and a direct relationship has been described mathematically relating magnetic field characteristics to the magnitude of stress due to magnetostriction. The role that hydrogen could play in the transition to low-carbon economy has refuelled the emphasis on hydrogen-related cracking mechanisms\, and how these could affect the integrity of the energy infrastructure. DESCRIPTION:To be held: Lancaster Hall Hotel\, 35 Craven Terrace\, London W2 3EL \n“Meeting Todays Materials Challenges to Enable Low Carbon Hydrogen Production at Scale”\, Stephen Shapcott\, Senior Principal Materials and Corrosion Engineer\, Johnson Matthey. \nThis talk will give an overview of the fundamental materials degradation mechanisms to be considered in methane hydrogen reforming production routes. As public pressure to limit global warming continues to rise\, governments\, policy makers and regulators are looking for the most effective ways to achieve the target set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to keep the global temperature increase to below 1.5°C above pre‑industrial levels. \nThere is a growing realisation that hydrogen has a vital role to play\, particularly to decarbonise sectors and applications that are otherwise extremely difficult to abate\, such as industrial processes\, heavy duty freight movement\, dispatchable power generation and heating applications. Hydrogen will also provide long-term (for instance seasonal) energy storage\, enabling much greater uptake of renewable power generation\, which itself is a key prerequisite of the clean energy transition. \nWhile hydrogen can be produced through the electrolysis of water\, most of the hydrogen produced today is manufactured by steam methane reforming\, in which\, at high temperatures natural gas is converted to hydrogen and CO2. This CO2 can be captured or diverted in such a way as to not be released into the atmosphere such as through Carbon Capture\, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). \nProduction of bulk low-cost\, low carbon hydrogen from fossil resources is an integral part of meeting global net zero ambitions immediately with proven methods\, while immature zero carbon hydrogen production technologies are developed. Frank Cheng\nZoom Event – More Information to Follow \nInternal Corrosion of Pipelines: Mechanisms\, Modelling and Management \nInternal corrosion of pipelines is a complex phenomenon\, and the complexity arises from the fact that multiple chemical and electrochemical reactions occur simultaneously in the environment where numerous factors affecting the corrosion processes have interrelated each other. A fundamental understanding of the phenomenon is essential to modelling\, prediction and management of the corrosion processes\, providing recommendations to industry for improved pipeline integrity management. \nThis talk includes contents which are based the author’s extensive research experiences and interactions with industry in the last decades. A thermodynamic model was developed to determine the electrochemical anodic and cathodic reactions occurring during internal corrosion of pipelines under given conditions. Parametric effects such as solution pH\, CO2 partial pressure\, temperature\, etc. were considered. The corrosion kinetics is quantified by considering the synergism of mass transfer\, charge transfer and film formation in the corrosion processes. In addition to uniform corrosion\, localised corrosion under deposit is paid much attention. The unique role of microorganism\, particularly sulphate-reducing bacteria\, in initiation and growth of corrosion pits was investigated. Numerical models were developed by integration of electrochemical corrosion with fluid hydrodynamics in the pipeline\, enabling prediction of the location of corrosion occurrence and the corrosion rate over a long-term period of service. In addition to the multi-physics field coupling model for corrosion process simulation\, conventional solution chemistry model and fluid mechanics-based model were also proposed for quick evaluation and prediction of internal corrosion rate. \nDownload Webinar Flyer \nRegistration for the Event

However\, this talk will highlight new energy sectors and where corrosion will continue to have a negative impact on such sectors. \nBill Hedges (UK) FNACE\, FICorr\, CEng has 34 years’ experience of materials\, metallurgy and corrosion in the oil and gas and materials industries. Bill spent 23 years of his career in corrosion at BP\, reaching the ranks BP’s Chief Corrosion Engineer. Bill has 35 publications\, 3 Patents and 1 book (as co-author) in the field of materials and corrosion. \nThis presentation covers three themes including (i) A career in corrosion\, (ii) Corrosion and materials challenges facing hydrocarbon production\, and finally (iii) How corrosion can impact the future of renewable energies. \nThe talk summarises that although significant progress and great advancements have been made in the field of corrosion control and management\, many challenges remain as we embark on a joint global venture to achieve net-zero; the requirement for future innovation in the energy sectors is more important than ever. DESCRIPTION:January 13\, 2022 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm\n“Life extension of offshore platforms\, through retrofit CP design assisted by modelling’’ – Talk by Dr Paolo Marcassoli\, Cathodic Protection and Inspections Manager at Cescor\, and Istvan Bartha\, Independent Subsea Consultant.  \nThousands of permanent offshore structures for oil and gas production in the world\, including steel jacket platforms\, are reaching or have exceeded their original design life. They require extension of life or re-qualification programs to prolong their operating life. Cathodic protection (CP) is one of the issues to be carefully managed as part of this process. In case the original CP system cannot guarantee the planned residual life\, a retrofit intervention shall be designed and executed.  The design of CP retrofit systems\, although technically adhering to the stipulations of the applicable codes\, does not necessarily follow the criteria and approaches adopted for new facilities\, as the intervention requires to be executed with the structure in-place\, and this has a strong impact on installation requirements and costs. Accordingly\, dedicated CP expertise has been developed for retrofit applications\, aimed to select the most convenient system. A tailored approach is followed\, by considering the most appropriate design parameters\, affected by the present polarisation conditions\, presence of marine growth and calcareous deposit on the structure. Finite Element Method (FEM) and Boundary Element Method (BEM) modelling are extensively and successfully used as part of the selection and optimisation of galvanic anode or impressed current systems. \nIn this presentation\, the definition of CP design parameters and the optimisation activity assisted by modelling are illustrated from the viewpoint of real industrial application; taking into consideration limitations imposed during the installation phase. \nAbout the presenters: \nDr. Paolo Marcassoli (Cescor – Cathodic Protection and Inspections Manager) \nPaolo Marcassoli has fifteen years’ experience in materials and corrosion engineering and cathodic protection engineering gained in academic field and the onshore and offshore oil & gas industry\, offshore wind\, civil and infrastructures. After 6 years of academic and research work at University of Bergamo\, he joined Cescor in January 2012 and he was Manager of business line Products in July 2012\, Production Manager in August 2013 and Inspections and Production Manager in October 2014. \nHe holds the position of Cathodic Protection and Inspections Manager since April 2019. \nHe primarily carries out activities in the fields of CP design and FEM modeling\, monitoring and CP inspections\, corrosion control. \nIstvan Bartha (Independent Subsea Consultant) \nIstvan Bartha is an experienced Subsea Integrity Engineer with over 20 years of experience in field of subsea\, pipelines\, structures and bridge engineering\, who participated in major Oil and Gas projects ranging from concept and design stages through to fabrication\, installation and operation of new and ageing assets. \nFollowing obtaining his BSc degree in Metallurgical Engineering\, he worked 7 years in the bridge construction industry in Hungary\, followed by moving in the UK in 2008 to pursue a career in the British Oil & Gas industry. In Britain\, he gained experience in onshore and offshore application of Cathodic Protection systems working for Pipeline Maintenance Ltd\, then joined Wood where worked as a Senior Integrity Engineer\, responsible for development of Integrity Management Strategies for various Clients. In 2016 he completed his MSc studies in Subsea Engineering at Cranfield University\, and currently acting as Subsea Pipelines Technical Authority for Petrofac North Sea operated assets as an Independent Contractor.      \nIstvan understands key design and operational principles of onshore\, subsea and topside production\, and control systems\, requiring detailed analyses of technical data such as RBI\, FMECA\, RCA or CP\, collaboration with other engineering disciplines and close interface with the Client.
