SUMMARY:Midlands Branch Workshop: Surface Analysis for Corrosion
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\n \nIt is estimated that corrosion in industrialised nations can costs up to 5.0% of GNP per year. Thus reduction or elimination of corrosion has the potential to save vast amounts of money. \nUnder normal circumstances\, corrosion concerns very thin layers at a surface\, when a protective or passivating surface oxide film breaks down allowing contact between the active metal and invading molecular species. To tackle these issues\, it is necessary to understand the corrosion process in each specific case\, which can only be done by understanding the chemistry within the first few atomic layers of a surface. \nAppropriate analytical techniques for surface analysis and depth profiling can help to provide a competitive edge in understanding and controlling corrosion. \nLoughborough Surface Analysis Ltd (LSA) and Midlands Surface Analysis Ltd (MSA) in association with the Institute of Corrosion Midlands Branch are organising a one-day workshop addressing surface analysis and depth profiling techniques and how they can be used to help with a variety of challenges relating to corrosion. The workshop draws upon a wealth of real-world experience in using these techniques to assist with issues such as: \n\nCorrosion and Corrosion Protection\nStaining\nCoatings\nDelamination\nContamination and Impurities\nCleaning\nEtching\nAdhesion\nSurface Treatment\n\nThe workshop will be held at Aston University\, Birmingham\, located at the heart of England\, with good road\, rail and air links to all parts of the UK. The workshop will consist of a series of seminars given by experts in the field on the individual techniques (including case studies)\, together with an optional practical demonstrations on some of the techniques in the laboratories of MSA Ltd. \nOpportunities will also be provided to discuss participants’ specific cases either in an open forum or in private with the analysts present. \nWho should attend? \nThis workshop provides a unique opportunity for failure analysts\, process engineers\, yield improvement managers\, quality control managers and R&D staff to learn about or refresh their knowledge of surface analytical and depth profiling techniques. If you have the task of fixing the material related problems when they arise then this is the workshop for you. \nAgenda: \n9.30 Coffee and Registration \n10.00 Welcome\, introduction and overview of workshop \n10.15 X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) (provides compositional and chemical state information) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) (elemental information at very high spatial resolution). \n11.00 Optical topographical profiling \n11.15 Coffee break\, networking \n11.45 Environmental scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) (provides topographical\, elemental and chemical characterization of surfaces). \n12.30 Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) – ultra-high sensitivity to all elements \n12.45 Atomic force microscopy (AFM)\, nano hardness and nano scratch testing \n13.00 Lunch\, networking \n14.00 Optional tour and laboratory demonstration. \nThere will be the opportunity for participants to discuss problems of a commercially confidential nature with representative from LSA and MSA on a one to one basis after the close of the meeting. If required\, NDAs should be supplied to cover items discussed in these separate meetings. \nDownload Information Leaflet and Agenda

SUMMARY:West Riding OCCA - Aspects of Protective Coatings – Protection of Steel\, Wood & Plastic Substrates
DESCRIPTION:Provisional timings \n10.30-11:20 – Delegate Registration\, Coffee\, Table Tops and Networking\n11.30 – Keynote\n13:20 – Lunch\, Table Tops and Networking\n15:55 – Comfort Break\, Photos\, Table Tops and Networking\n17.05 – Closing Remarks Networking  \nLink to Forum website\, for the latest information about the event and the presentations\, posted as we receive it: \nLink to Registration webpage\, with Early Bird rates: \nTable Top Presentations are available. In more modern times\, Coatings Technologists needed to formulate Coatings to Protect Wood substrates of lesser and cheaper\, quality. \nPlastics – In many cases replacing Wood\, or Metal substrates\, are not innately problem free. \nEven now\, some consumers think they are\, and expect Plastic items to last for many years. \nIf they do\, last for years\, is it the type of Plastic\, or a Coating\, or other technology protecting them? \nWhen Protecting Wood and Plastic substrates\, even if not against failure\, technologists must Protect the aesthetics\, that encouraged the consumer to purchase the item. (At least until the marketing department produce the next ‘must have’ latest version). \nUnderstanding important “Aspects of Protective Coatings” for different substrates\, when selecting and combining raw materials and formulating a coating\, will certainly help. \nKnowing who can help you with technical support and sound advice\, will save many hours of search and bench work. \nWest Riding OCCA have ‘Selected and Combined’ a Forum of companies that are keen to help you understand “Aspects of Protective Coatings” for different substrates\, such as ‘Steel\, Wood & Plastic’. \nThey will help dispel some of the mysteries\, give ‘Sound Advice’ and offer ‘Technical Support’. \nThis Forum has something for everybody who has an interest in Protective Coatings for different substrates; from large producers\, to small Industrial paints manufacturers and the companies that support them. \nThis concentrated form of lecture programme will have many advantages to members and companies\, and we have come to expect good support from OCCA\, and non-members. \n “Aspects of Protective Coatings – Protection of Steel\, Wood & Plastic Substrates” continues West Riding OCCA’s popular series of Forums showing developments in the Surface Coatings industry. The event can be used in support of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for Professional Membership: Licentiate (LTSC); Associate (ATSC); and Fellow (FTSC). \nCome and join West Riding OCCA\, for a typical\, relaxed\, friendly and informative afternoon. \nThere will\, as usual\, be Early Bird delegate rates and a non-OCCA member offer of free membership for a year. \n If you have queries\, please contact: \nRob Lewis\nrobnbert.lewis@gmail.com\n+44 (0)7935 804100 \nSandy Gunn\nSandy.Gunn@brimham.com\n+44 (0)787 233 5989\n \n  \nAspects of Protective Coatings – Protection of Steel\, Wood & Plastic Substrates – Programme Summary:\nNow also includes Concrete Substrate. \nKeynote Address (20 mins)\nProfessor (Emeritus) James T.
