SUMMARY:Evening of Case Study Presentation Young Engineer Programme 2018
DESCRIPTION:Evening of Case Study Presentation Young Engineer Programme 2018 is Case Study Presentations which is the culmination to this year Young Engineer Programme. \nThe Case Study which as you can see is a difficult scenario to offer a solution. The candidates have been split into teams assigned mentors and asked to present their case having demonstrated the following:\n1. Review the exchanger design/ operating data and propose credible root causes for the degradation of the 1st stage tube sheet.\n2. Define the potential failure scenarios for degradation\n3. If the cooler were taken out service\, describe a testing scope to confirm the root cause of the corrosion damage. Note: The Scope can include destructive methods\n4. Explain how you would perform a corrosion risk assessment to help the installation’s management team determine if the train can be restarted. How would you determine the scope the ongoing integrity surveillance  plan to support a restart and what would the scope include?\n5. What mitigation options could applied to prolong the service life of the heat exchanger? Critically review the list of mitigation options and present case for the method (s) that would be implemented at site.\n6. Using the design and operating data provided\, present alternative materials of construction for a replacement heat exchanger and describe the basis for the selection. Note that the heat exchanger design may be changed to accommodate the material selected but the design parameters and foot print should be broadly similar to the original. \nThe winning team will be rewarded with an expenses paid trip to Nashville to attend the NACE Conference 2019. It is not a holiday\, they will be expected to report on the Technical Sessions they have attended and what they have learnt from them. There will of course be a lot of networking and introduction whilst they are in the environment. \nVenue: Imperial College\, The lecture Theatre Rooms 163 and 164 \nRSVP: Imma Mobbs at imma.mobbs@c-i-m.co.uk or icorrlondon@gmail.com \nIt is clearly an even NOT TO BE MISSED and we would really appreciate your support \nHosts : \nGeorge Winning \nTrevor Osborne \nDavid Mobbs \n

SUMMARY:The Corrosion Science Symposium 10/11 September 2018
DESCRIPTION:Dates of Event\n\n10th September 2018 – 11th September 2018\n\n\n\nLast Booking Date for this Event\n\n31st August 2018\n\nDescription\nIn an age when materials and engineering systems are expected to withstand ever more extreme environments corrosion remains of great importance. The cost of corrosion is still estimated to be 4% GDP for most developed nations although this has increased to 6.2% in the USA as per the latest NACE Corrosion cost study in 2016. This confirms that better mitigation techniques are still required and new approaches need to be explored. Managing corrosion is a pertinent challenge for industry and academia across many industrial applications (e.g. oil and gas\, automotive\, biomedical\, energy\, space exploration). In this 59th Corrosion Science Symposium we will capture exciting and recent advances in corrosion science and engineering\, the application of these principles to engineering systems\, and discuss the exciting developments across a wide range of application areas. \nEvent Package\nStandard Registration\n\nCost\n£300.00\n\n\n\nDescription\n\nSymposium fees include attendance at all the sessions on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 September 2018 with synopses of all papers; registration reception on Sunday; light refreshments and lunches; and symposium dinner on Monday evening.\n\nStudent Registration\n\nCost\n£200.00\n\n\n\nDescription\n\nSymposium fees include attendance at all the sessions on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 September 2018 with synopses of all papers; registration reception on Sunday; light refreshments and lunches; and symposium dinner on Monday evening.\n\nContact\nJo Thompson\nCSS Secretariat\nCPD\, Conference & Events Unit\, Faculty of Engineering\nUniversity of Leeds\nLEEDS\, LS2 9JT\, UK\nT: +44 (0)113 343 2494\nE: CSS2018@leeds.ac.uk\nW:https://tinyurl.com/corrosion-science-symposium \nOr Please Click link below for details of the event:\nhttps://store.leeds.ac.uk/conferences-and-events/cpd-faculty-of-engineering/cpd-courses-and-events/corrosion-science-symposium-2018

SUMMARY:London Branch March Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Technology Advancements in Integrity Management of Storage Tanks \nBy \nJohn Lilley and Mark Stone \nSonomatic Ltd \n The industry is well versed with Corrosion mapping of vessels and pipework but Corrosion Mapping of Storage Tanks has always relied on “dropping the tank” which has an impact on production and risk. The industry does not like working in confined spaces and there are moves towards zero-man entry over the lifetime of storage and process vessels. \nStorage Tanks are susceptible to a range of internal and external corrosion processes. As such inspection plays a major role in effective integrity management of Storage Tanks. Historically\, inspection of the floor has relied on emptying the tank and personnel entry for cleaning and inspection. Internal inspection for other mechanisms also takes place at this time. This means tanks can be out of service for significant periods of time. \nSonomatic have developed a range of methods for inspection of Storage Tanks while in-service. A key element is robotic cleaning and inspection of the floor. This forms part of a comprehensive inspection in which the tank shell is also inspected non-intrusively using ultrasonic corrosion mapping supported by statistical analysis. The presentation will give an overview of the technologies involved\, how these link into more efficient integrity management of Storage Tanks and will also include a case study of field application. \nA fascinating not to be missed presentation \n For further information please contact \nicorrlondon@gmail.com \n

SUMMARY:Midlands Branch Workshop: Surface Analysis for Corrosion
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\n \nIt is estimated that corrosion in industrialised nations can costs up to 5.0% of GNP per year. Thus reduction or elimination of corrosion has the potential to save vast amounts of money. \nUnder normal circumstances\, corrosion concerns very thin layers at a surface\, when a protective or passivating surface oxide film breaks down allowing contact between the active metal and invading molecular species. To tackle these issues\, it is necessary to understand the corrosion process in each specific case\, which can only be done by understanding the chemistry within the first few atomic layers of a surface. \nAppropriate analytical techniques for surface analysis and depth profiling can help to provide a competitive edge in understanding and controlling corrosion. \nLoughborough Surface Analysis Ltd (LSA) and Midlands Surface Analysis Ltd (MSA) in association with the Institute of Corrosion Midlands Branch are organising a one-day workshop addressing surface analysis and depth profiling techniques and how they can be used to help with a variety of challenges relating to corrosion. The workshop draws upon a wealth of real-world experience in using these techniques to assist with issues such as: \n\nCorrosion and Corrosion Protection\nStaining\nCoatings\nDelamination\nContamination and Impurities\nCleaning\nEtching\nAdhesion\nSurface Treatment\n\nThe workshop will be held at Aston University\, Birmingham\, located at the heart of England\, with good road\, rail and air links to all parts of the UK. The workshop will consist of a series of seminars given by experts in the field on the individual techniques (including case studies)\, together with an optional practical demonstrations on some of the techniques in the laboratories of MSA Ltd. \nOpportunities will also be provided to discuss participants’ specific cases either in an open forum or in private with the analysts present. \nWho should attend? \nThis workshop provides a unique opportunity for failure analysts\, process engineers\, yield improvement managers\, quality control managers and R&D staff to learn about or refresh their knowledge of surface analytical and depth profiling techniques. If you have the task of fixing the material related problems when they arise then this is the workshop for you. \nAgenda: \n9.30 Coffee and Registration \n10.00 Welcome\, introduction and overview of workshop \n10.15 X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) (provides compositional and chemical state information) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) (elemental information at very high spatial resolution). \n11.00 Optical topographical profiling \n11.15 Coffee break\, networking \n11.45 Environmental scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) (provides topographical\, elemental and chemical characterization of surfaces). \n12.30 Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) – ultra-high sensitivity to all elements \n12.45 Atomic force microscopy (AFM)\, nano hardness and nano scratch testing \n13.00 Lunch\, networking \n14.00 Optional tour and laboratory demonstration. \nThere will be the opportunity for participants to discuss problems of a commercially confidential nature with representative from LSA and MSA on a one to one basis after the close of the meeting. If required\, NDAs should be supplied to cover items discussed in these separate meetings. \nDownload Information Leaflet and Agenda
