SUMMARY:Young ICorr event: A career in corrosion and its importance in the future of energy including renewables + Festive Quiz
DESCRIPTION:Following the popular Young ICorr Festive Quiz of 2020\, we will be hosting another online event this December. Join us on Thursday 16th December\, 2021\, at 4pm for our 2021 Festive Quiz and Talk. \nYoung Institute of Corrosion (Young ICorr) are pleased to announce that Bill Hedges\, ICorr President\, will be presenting “A career in corrosion and its importance in the future of energy including renewables“. The general energy outlook indicates that there is an increasing global energy demand and that hydrocarbons still contribute to the majority of the global energy mix. However\, this talk will highlight new energy sectors and where corrosion will continue to have a negative impact on such sectors. \nBill Hedges (UK) FNACE\, FICorr\, CEng has 34 years’ experience of materials\, metallurgy and corrosion in the oil and gas and materials industries. Bill spent 23 years of his career in corrosion at BP\, reaching the ranks BP’s Chief Corrosion Engineer. Bill has 35 publications\, 3 Patents and 1 book (as co-author) in the field of materials and corrosion. \nThis presentation covers three themes including (i) A career in corrosion\, (ii) Corrosion and materials challenges facing hydrocarbon production\, and finally (iii) How corrosion can impact the future of renewable energies. \nThe talk summarises that although significant progress and great advancements have been made in the field of corrosion control and management\, many challenges remain as we embark on a joint global venture to achieve net-zero; the requirement for future innovation in the energy sectors is more important than ever. On this basis\, and his own experiences as a corrosion engineer. Bill concludes that the future is bright and exciting for anyone pursuing a career in corrosion-related disciplines. \nFollowing the talk\, there will be a team quiz\, where we will allocate the teams to enable you to meet other Young ICorr members. Then\, there will be a networking session to enable you to interact with your peers. This is a great event to socialise\, network and participate in a fun corrosion and materials quiz with a festive twist. \nRegister for the event \nWe look forward to seeing you then! \nFollow Young ICorr on LinkedIn to ensure you do not miss out on future events. \nTest yourself with our Teaser Questions from last year’s Festive Quiz: \nQ1. In the song 12 Days of Christmas\, five golden rings were given on the fifth day\, what’s the atomic number of gold? A. 5; B. 24; C. 79; D. 120  (A = 79) \nQ2. What is the substance found in your fizzy Christmas mocktail which causes corrosion of carbon steel? (A = Carbonic Acid)
