Meet the Committee

Kathleen Purnell – Chair & YEP Co-Ordinator

“Hi, I’m Kathy, and I’ve been in the corrosion field for several years now. After completing a Master’s in Chemistry at the University of Hull, I worked as a Technical Service Manager at Teal and Mackrill, a specialist coatings manufacturer, while also working as an ICorr-qualified Coating Inspector. After several years in this role, I pursued a PhD in Corrosion at The University of Manchester, where I became more involved in ICorr activities, joining the Northwest Committee and initiating a student lecture series. I now work at the University of Leeds as a research fellow in Corrosion and serve on the Yorkshire and Humber Committee. I’m excited and looking forward to developing more opportunities and activities for the Young Members of ICorr, and I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity. When I’m not thinking about or talking about corrosion – I love reading, video games and running.

Alyshia Keogh – Vice Chair & YEP Co-Ordinator

industries alongside an exceptional expert team. My journey began with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Sheffield, followed by experience in the heat treatment and manufacturing sectors. I then pursued a PhD in Metallurgy and Corrosion at the University of Manchester, where my involvement with ICorr began. Since completing the Young Engineers’ Programme in 2024, I’ve joined the NW branch committee and now serve as Vice Chair for Young ICorr. I’m passionate about creating meaningful networking opportunities for early-career professionals and academics, building the connections that will shape the future of corrosion engineering and deliver innovative, real-world solutions. Beyond engineering I enjoy gigs and festivals, running, travelling and spending time with my cat.

Lauren Sayer – Events Co-ordinator

I’m a graduate corrosion engineer at bp, currently supporting the central bpSolutions team across both project and operations work. I joined bp just under a year ago after completing an integrated Master’s in Chemistry at the University of Leeds. In my final year, I completed my Master’s project in materials chemistry, which sparked my interest and materials and corrosion and led me into this field.

I’m a recent member of the Young ICorr committee and look forward to getting actively involved!

Danny Burkle

I am Principal Engineer and corrosion testing specialist at LBBC Baskerville, with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Corrosion from the University of Leeds. As a professional member of the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr), I formerly chaired Young ICorr and now lead the Corrosion Engineering Division. I am responsible for technical sales and business development, focusing on helping clients select the right equipment for their corrosion testing requirements. I have authored six lead-author and more than ten co-authored journal papers, and I am dedicated to advancing corrosion testing standards, equipment design, and industry best practice.

Ben Hudson

I’m a Mechanical & CP Engineer in the gas industry, previous winner of the YICorr YEP 2025. Focused on delivering practical engineering solutions through strategic planning and cross-disciplinary collaboration

Harry Tookey – Mentoring Co-ordinator

I’m Harry Tookey, and I’m a third-year PhD student at the University of Leeds with my research focusing on new corrosion testing methodologies. My background before coming into corrosion was in aerospace engineering but I got the opportunity to enter the field of corrosion straight after completing my master’s. In my spare time, I am a fan of films and also watch cricket when I get the chance.

Kaivalya Borwankar – Awards Co-Ordinator

Hi, I am Kai. I am a PhD student at the University of Manchester. My PhD involves imaging organic anticorrosion coatings at different length scales to understand the mechanism of coating failure. Beside my PhD, my interests include travelling, books, video games and spicy food. I look at my opportunity at ICorr to help connect with experts in the field of corrosion from industries and academia while also engaging in outreach activities to promote corrosion science.

Izabela Gajewska

I’m a Corrosion and Integrity Engineer at Intertek CAPCIS, working with global clients in the Energy and Chemicals sectors. My career began with a degree in Chemical Technology, specialising in composites and nanomaterials, followed by internships at WESSLING and KP (currently Asahi Group) Brewery in Poland. After completing my Master’s in Engineering, I moved to the UK and spent three years in logistics at Kingsland Drinks, sharpening my planning and supply chain skills. In 2019, I transitioned into corrosion consultancy, where I now focus on material selection, corrosion risk assessments, and integrity studies. I’m also a Professional Member of ICorr, Vice Chair of ICorr Northwest, and a former champion of the ICorr Young Engineer Programme – an experience that inspired me to co-organise the 2024-2026 editions to help develop future talent. My goals are to achieve Chartered Engineer status and, ultimately, to make a positive impact in the field of corrosion while contributing to the betterment of communities. Outside of engineering, I’m a big fan of electronic music (I’m also a DJ and producer), I love cats, enjoy running, and love exploring quality food wherever I go!
