Insulation Inspector Level 2 – Classroom

Insulation Inspector Level 2 – Classroom

Course Overview

Designed to assist candidates in gaining the skills and knowledge to transition from Coating Inspection to Insulation Inspection.

This Level 2 course assumes all candidates hold ICorr Painting or Protective Coating Inspector approval (any level) and therefore have some knowledge of inspection philosophy.

Some corrosion and coating knowledge is also important for the insulation inspector due to the large amount of corrosion problems which have arisen under insulation.

Inspection of both thermal (hot and cold) insulation and acoustic insulation is covered and is applicable to pipework, vessels and equipment used in the oil, gas and process industries.

Course content

The Level 2 course content covers:

  • Quality assurance
  • Inspection and quality control
  • Normative documents
  • Insulation systems
  • Insulating materials
  • Protective coverings
  • Fixings
  • Insulation design (basic)

  • Application of insulation
  • Scaffolding
  • Handling and storage of materials
  • Health and safety considerations
  • Common problems encountered
  • Corrosion under insulation
  • Reporting
  • Standards applicable
Course pre-requisite

Candidates are required to:

1. Have a knowledge of inspection philosophy, surface preparation, anti-corrosion coatings and how to use common inspection instruments.

2. Hold an ICorr Protective Coatings Inspector (or equivalent) certificate and ideally hold a minimum of 12 months’ coatings related experience.

3. Submit their CV to ensure they have the required pre-requisite qualifications and experience.

4. Seek advice if hold less than 12 months’ coatings experience as they may still undertake the course and become certified once relevant experience has been obtained.

Qualification

The course is accredited by the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr). On successful completion of the course and relevant coatings related experience, candidates will become a certified Level 2 Insulation Inspector.

The certificate is valid for 5 years and can be renewed online prior to expiry.

Special note

If examination is required, candidates must hold a Painting Inspector certification (any level). No certification needed if course is used for information only. A 3 day course route to certification is available without holding a Painting Inspector approval – please enquire. Fireproofing is not covered in this course; see Fireproofing Inspector ICorr Level 2. It has been agreed by PDTC (ICorr) to add an experience assessment to all ICorr certifications for personnel engaged in painting and coating inspection. Full details of the changes are to be published in the ICorr REQ DOC.
