Novosound, a leading ultrasonic company based in Scotland, has announced it has won its first international honour at the 2021 Materials Performance Corrosion Innovation of the
Year awards.

Organised by the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), Novosound received the award in the Testing category for its revolutionary Belenus ultrasound sensor, which provides corrosion monitoring across a variety of structures and environments in a range of industries. Manufactured using its patented, thin-film technology, the Belenus is the world’s first corrosion monitoring sensor that can operate completely soaked in high-temperature atmospheres
up to 400°C for extended periods of time.

By providing highly accurate and real-time corrosion data from remote and inaccessible locations, the Belenus enables power plant, refining, processing, and manufacturing facility owners and operators to detect corrosion in metal pipework and structures early and reliably. This facilitates improved maintenance planning and increases operational efficiency, as corrosion issues can be actioned and mitigated before unexpected failures occur.

Dr Claire Thring, Application Specialist for the sensor, said: “The current limitations of ultrasound probes can be traced back to the core rigid, ceramic, sensor materials used in manufacturing, but by using the patented, flexible, core thin-film material, the Belenus can conform to any surface curvature, and  coupled with its compact size – roughly the size of a car key fob – allows it to be fitted to a range of structures including pipes, storage tanks and pressure vessels, enabling 24/7 asset monitoring.

Winn & Coales International Ltd has announced the acquisition of the global Viscotaq™ business, including Amcorr Products and Services Inc., a manufacturer of viscoelastic protective coatings.

Amcorr Products & Services Inc, based in San Antonio, USA are the formulators and manufacturers of viscoelastic protective coating technology, Viscotaq™. The patented Viscotaq™ product range is used for corrosion prevention and sealing applications on vital infrastructure across a broad range of sectors. The unique, self-healing technology of Viscotaq™ offers asset owners outstanding, long-term protection against corrosion.

Hempel protects the ground-breaking O2 tidal energy turbine

According to Hempel, they provided coatings to protect the Orbital O2 tidal energy turbine, the world’s most powerful tidal turbine. O2 is set to operate at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in the Orkney Islands in the UK. Around the islands of Orkney, tidal currents can reach over four metres per second, making them some of the strongest in the world. To harness this energy, Orbital’s O2 comprises two 1MW turbines, which together create a 600 m2 rotor area and can generate 2MW of clean, predictable energy. O2 is capable of supplying enough energy to power around 2,000 UK homes.

Hempel have been involved in the project since Orbital’s prototype SR2000 turbine was built in 2015. As well as high-performance anti-corrosion coatings, Hempel has supplied Hempaguard X7 for the O2’s turbine rotor blades. Hempaguard X7 was developed specifically to combat biofouling, such as algae and barnacles.

According to Andrew Scott, CEO of Orbital, collaborations with companies like Hempel have been key to the O2’s development. “We rely heavily on our supply chain to help deliver our pioneering technology such that it exceeds expectations, and in that regard, we are delighted to continue our relationship with Hempel for our novel coating applications”.

Fluor’s Stork Awarded Inspection, Surveillance and Quality Assurance Services Contract by Babcock International Group

Fluor Corporation has announced that Stork, a Fluor company, has been awarded a 2-year contract for inspections, surveillance and quality assurance services by Babcock International Group, covering various sites in the United Kingdom, including Babcock’s Rosyth site, as well as other global locations. Babcock’s Rosyth site is one of the largest waterside manufacturing and repair facilities in the UK. This new specialist services contract award demonstrates Stork’s expanding footprint into new onshore markets as well as the company’s proven capabilities to deliver value-added solutions to clients, stated the company.  Over the next two years, Stork will provide independent third-party inspection, surveillance and quality assurance services to assist Babcock International Group in complying with regulatory and legal requirements for the quality standards of the company’s products and services.

Stork’s office in Aberdeen will lead the work, in addition to assistance from its global network of industry experts. The project began in January 2021.

A Thank you to Jim Preston

Jim has been involved with cathodic protection (CP) and structural repair of steel in concrete structures since 1991, starting with Tarmac Construction and their Tarmac Global specialist CP division. This became Corrosion Control Services Ltd where Jim progressed to Director and General Manager. Since 2007 he has been an owner and Managing Director of Corrosion Prevention Ltd. In addition to steel in concrete CP, Jim is an expert in CP for ports and harbours, using both galvanic anodes and impressed current systems. He has also worked in the performance assessment of buried pipelines, including the use of DCVG and CIPS techniques.

He has applied this broad knowledge of CP to the Institute of Corrosion’s Training and Competence assessment of CP personnel. He was also one of the early recipients of the Chartered Engineer award through ICorr, and his application was also the subject of an award for the best in its year from the Certification Body.

Jim has been an active and extremely valuable member of ICorr and the Cathodic Protection Governing Board (CPGB) for many years. Jim was the CPGB Chair for some years and he oversaw the considerable task of the revision of all of the ICorr CP Training Courses in accordance with BS EN ISO 15257. He has passed this responsibility on to Chris Spence.

Jim decided after many years of great service to CPGB that he needed to step back from the committee due to his other commitments.

Jim brought his wealth of knowledge and a was a calming influence to us all at CPGB and on behalf of us I would like to say thank you. His clarity of thought, attention to detail and ability to sort the priorities from those issues of lesser importance have been fundamental in the success of CPGB’s work.

His colleagues also found him to be a calming influence, with far too much common sense for an engineer. He will be missed.

I think that it goes without saying, that on behalf of us all at CPGB,  we would like to offer thanks to the time, dedication, and effort, that Jim has put in to ICorr.
