ICorr Leadership Team and YEP Delegation Attends AMPP 2025 Conference in Nashville, Strengthening Global Collaboration in Corrosion Science and Engineering

ICorr Leadership Team and YEP Delegation Attends AMPP 2025 Conference in Nashville, Strengthening Global Collaboration in Corrosion Science and Engineering

A high-profile delegation from the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr) attended the AMPP (Association for Materials Protection and Performance) Annual Conference, held in Nashville from 6th to 10th April 2025. Representing the UK-based institute, the delegation included ICorr President Dr. Yunnan Gao and the latest six winners of ICorr’s prestigious Young Engineer Programme (YEP), generously sponsored by BP and represented by Dr Chris Williams of Sunbury Research Centre.

The AMPP Conference, which is a major international event for the corrosion and materials protection community, brought together industry experts, researchers, and professionals from around the globe. ICorr’s presence underscored its commitment to fostering global partnerships and investing in the next generation of corrosion professionals.

During the conference, Dr. Gao held constructive meetings with several key figures in the industry, including Juan Caballero, Chair of the AMPP Board of Directors, Alan Thomas, CEO of AMPP, and the broader AMPP senior leadership team. He also engaged in discussions with Gareth Hinds, President of the European Federation of Corrosion (EFC), further strengthening ICorr’s ties within the European and international corrosion communities.

“Our discussions reinforced the strong alignment between our organisations,” said Dr. Gao. “I’m excited about the potential for future collaboration in advancing corrosion science and protection on a global scale. Am looking forward to what we can achieve together.”

The participation of the 2024 Young Engineer Programme winners together with several Past YEP Winners highlights ICorr’s ongoing dedication to professional development and knowledge exchange. Their involvement at the AMPP Conference and Exhibition not only offered valuable exposure to cutting-edge developments in the field but also showcased the depth of talent being cultivated within the UK corrosion sector.

The conference concluded with a shared sense of enthusiasm and opportunity for future partnerships between ICorr, AMPP, EFC, and other international stakeholders. As the global challenges of corrosion continue to evolve, such collaborations remain vital in pushing the boundaries of innovation, sustainability, and technical excellence.

Hot Dip Galvanizing Inspector Level 2 – Classroom

Hot Dip Galvanizing Inspector Level 2- Classroom

Course Overview

Classroom course designed to assist candidates in gaining the skills and knowledge to inspect Hot Dip Galvanized steel products.

Hot-dip galvanizing is a process commonly used to provide long-term protection to steel products from corrosion. Hot-dip galvanized steel requires a thorough inspection of the finish product to ensure compliance with relevant specifications.

Approved by the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr) and produced with the assistance of the Galvanizers Association, this Level 2 course will help students to gain the knowledge to inspect hot-dip galvanized steel products and gain an industry recognised qualification.

The course assumes all candidates hold ICorr Painting or Protective Coating Inspector approval (any level), or lent, and therefore have some knowledge of inspection philosophy. Some corrosion and coating knowledge is also important due to the large amount of corrosion problems which have arisen.

Course content

This Level 2 course content covers:

  • Hot-dip galvanizing overview
  • Corrosion mechanisms
  • Surface preparation
  • Galvanizing chemistry
  • Inspection overview
  • Organic coating on galvanizing
  • Testing of galvanizing
  • Coating Faults
  • Handling and storage
  • Coating repair methods

Approved by the Institute of Corrosion (UK) and recognised by the Galvanizers Association

Course pre-requiste

Candidates are required to:

1

Have a knowledge of inspection philosophy, surface preparation, anti-corrosion coatings and how to use common inspection instruments.

2

Hold an ICorr Protective Coating Inspector (or equivalent) certificate and ideally hold a minimum of 12 months’ coatings related experience. Equivalent certifications include:

  • NACE CIP Level 1, 2 or 3
  • SSPC PCI
  • AMPP CIP Level 1, 2 or 3
  • Frosio Inspector Level 2 & 3
  • BGAS Painting Inspector Level 1 & 2

3

Seek advice if hold less than 12 months’ coating experience as they may still undertake the course and become certified once relevant experience has been obtained. Course can be taken for knowledge only without an examination.
Qualification

The course is accredited by the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr). On successful completion of the course and relevant coatings related experience, candidates will become a certified Level 2 Hot Dip Galvanizing Inspector.

The certificate is valid for 5 years and can be renewed online prior to expiry.
